Using a seperate process (python-vm-builder), I am building an ESX/ESXi compliant image that I have confirmed can be uploaded, imported and started in Workstation, ESX 3.0, ESXi 3.5 and even Server 2.0+.

I'm trying to go into the next step now, and convert this ESXi Image into a single OVF archive for even easier deployments.

Using the latest OVF Tool I have successfully created the new .ovf and zipped it up inside a tar.gz'd.  On my Windows box, I then extract it (using WinRAR), then using 'Import' in VIC try to import it.  When I select the OVF and click next it then throws the below error:

An error occurred while parsing the OVF descriptor

Unable to parse XML element 'Envelope'

What am I doing wrong? 

I have attached both the original VMX and the new OVF.

I recieve the following error "- Unsupported hardware version: 3". Please assist. Converting a vmx to a ovf. Recieve error when vmx file is opened.

I'm having some trouble getting the vSphere Client to import my OVF's. When using the vSphere Client, I successfully walk through the wizard to "Deploy OVF Template" then get the following error:

"Failed to deploy OVF package: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error"

Sometimes the error is a timeout error but this is very infrequent (I failed to capture the output).

In the Event log I see this error roughly 2 minutes after the import:

I can convert my OVF back to VMX format.

VMware ovftool 1.0.0 (build-166674). The command I'm executing is simply: ovftool "xxxx.vmx" "yyy.ovf"

It looks like a possible timeout issue on the cliet side, but I've reset the timeout (Edit->Client Settings->Client-Server command timeout = 600).  This didn't seem to have any impact on the problem.

This is driving me crazy! How do you specify which datastore to use when there are multiple?

I ran exactly the same command on a box that had one datastore and it worked fine (as expected). It created the VM folder in the root of the DS and then pulled across the VM from the OVF. However with multiple it just says no target datstore specified. I've tried a million combinations of ?-ds= with square brackets, without. Sometimes it says not found in inventory. I guess it's looking for a folder. But surely this can't be that hard?

Am I the only one that gets about 10Mbps (Megabits/second), or about 1MB/sec (megabyte/sec) throughput when using the ovftool to import a VM on a 1Gbps LAN?  I would assume there is some type of throttle on the service console network interface, even though I haven't found any evidence from the forums that indicates this is true.  It's just a little strange that we're getting "exactly" 10Mbps.  This happens on multiple vCenter servers and ESX clusters so I'm assuming it's a throttle.  From the one machine I run the ovftool from, I can import to 2 different clusters and get 20Mbps (10Mbps on each).

This is on vCenter 4.0 Update 2 and ESX 4.0 Update 2 (not ESXi) as well as 4.1 versions of these.

Any ideas?

I've been trying to import the ovf-based Oracle storage simulator to ESX4. Also tried importing to Workstation when that failed.

No luck. Not with integrated converter, not with standalone converter, not with ovftool. Changing/removing lines in .ovf file brings me a bit further but still no cigar.

The process stalls at different points, but typically I get an error about unknown OS or unsupported hardware, sometimes a parse error with no additional info.

Has anybody got this working?

The simulator is a virtual-box based Solaris appliance.

I am new to OVFTool  and am having difficulty using it in Terminal on my MacBook Pro to convert an OVA (created by exporting my WinXp virtual machine from within VirtualBox), to a VMX file for use in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro.

I have installed the OVFTool on my boot drive (partition) which is named "LFP OS", in the folder:  /Library/VMWare/OVFTool/.

I have the OVA file on my data drive (partition) which is named "LFP Data" in the folder: /Virtual Machines/WinXP.ova.

I want to create a virtual machine file (VMX) in the same location as the soure that I can then import into VMWare Fusion.  I have gone through the OVFTool User Guide, forums, Google etc. and cannot get it to work properly.  It may be as simple as my Terminal syntax being off.  Anyway, please help.

I am seeking guidance on automation\customization of an OVA deployment.

Looking to use an OVA due to it's compression ability which is favorable when needing to transfer a VMWare virtual machine from Host to Host for deployment at different location across a WAN.  In the past, we have created a VM template and provided customization file for deployment but the size of the template was too large for transfer across the WAN....so we would have to ship on seperate media.

I am looking to achieve the same end result of deployment of a vm template but through the deployment of the OVA template.

Here is where I am at so far:
1. Create the VM (in this case Windows XP SP3)
2. Export the VM to OVA Template.
3. Deploy OVA Template

All of the above works without any problem.  However, during deployment of the OVA, I would like to prompt the end user to input computer name, Fixed IP information or DHCP, domain to join, etc.  Additionally, I would like sysprep to run.

I have read the guide and numerous articles on the OVF descriptors, but not quite sure where or how to input these prompts so they appear during the OVA deployment.  Additionally, if I sysprep the vm before exporting to OVA, how can I get sysprep and the input from the end user deployment to work hand in hand.

When i try to deploy this OVF to a vSphere server, it fails at the disk transfer stage... it looks to me like ovftool is treating it like a local file:

Hi All,

Everytime I manually export a VM using vsphere client, I am getting the resultant ovf of much larger size. ( i.e. size of .vmdk's are much larger, increases by 10% everytime )
I looked at various temporary files and log files and deleted them before taking the ovf, but it also doesnt reduces the size significantly.
My vm doesnt do any huge IO on the disks.

Is there a best practice for exporting an ovf .? ( Ex. SLES based vms. )

Hey all. I know I am using proper syntax, but it seems like there's a missing service running on my esx cluster. I am able to log in with vSphere, but cannot use ovftool to export a stopped server in my ESX 4.0 cluster environment.

command I am using:

ovftool vi://[username]:[password]@vi://192.168.77.111/[serverid] d:\[serveridoutput].ovf

the error I am receiving is as follows:

Error: Could not lookup host: [username]

Completed with errors

Now it's interesting because the server does seem to know that I am using a proper user/pass because if I make a mistake on the password, I am given another chance to log in, until I miss three tries. If I enter the correct password, it seems to almost connect, then fails out with the above error. I would *REALLY* appreciate some help with this guys.

Is anybody aware of what network flows exist when deploying an ovf file using ovftool through a vCenter?  Right now ovftool is continually erroring out with the following message:

Transfer Failed                      
Error: Network connection was lost.
Completed with errors

When watching on the vCenter I can see that the virtual machine is created but then it looks like data is never actually transferred.  So I know that the initial connection to vCenter is successful.

I'm guessing the initial connection happens with vCenter and then the data transfer occurs directly with the ESX.  Would be very appreciative if somebody could confirm this and identify the port that the data transfer happens on.

Am trying to export an ova from a VM using ovftool.  Something along the lines of...

ovftool --prop:Version=100 --privateKey=./id_rsa.pem --eula@=./eula.txt vi://root:mypass@myserver.mydomain.com/myVM ./myOVA.ova

Everything looks good except that I haven't been able to define the 'Product', 'Version' and 'Vendor'  that appears in the initial dialog when customers deploy the template into a running ESX / vCenter instance.

Assume this must be a v common question but have not found how this might be done from the ovftool user guide (http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/ovf/ovf301/ovftool-301-userguide.pdf) or the VMware communities.  Closest I've found is http://communities.vmware.com/thread/328504 which indicates that defining a vCenter vApp allow configurable properties to be set.

Is there any way to define these parameters via ovftool?  If not, is there a way to hack the .ova manually to define them?

I been working on the setting properties in the ovf template and this is working fine so far.

Basically, I add property in the product section under property tag and read its value during deployment time using

/usr/sbin/vmtoolsd --cmd 'info-get guestinfo.ovfEnv'

<ProductSection ovf:class="com.palm.product" ovf:instance="1">

     <Info>info section</Info>
     <Product>LimeLite</Product>
     <Vendor>Palm</Vendor>

     <Property ovf:key="UserName" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true" ovf:value="Admin" ovf:qualifiers="MinLen(0),MaxLen(65535)">
          <Label>UserName</Label>
          <Description>Creates an user account with the Name provided</Description>
     </Property>

</ProductSection>

Now, I need get password for the user account which we create during deployment. I looked into property data types and I couldn't figure out

the password type that masks the password entered in the dailog during deployment time.

Is password functionality avaialbe in the ovf template already ? If yes, please point me to the location from where I can make use of this.

The property type which are avaialbe in the settings is:

String, StringChoice, Integer, Real, Boolean, External IP Address, vApp IP Address.

I coudn't find password type in here.

# ovftool file.ova file

Opening OVA source: file.ova

The manifest validates

Opening VMX target: file

Error: OVF Package is not supported by target:

- Line 60: OVF hardware element 'ResourceType' with instance ID '3': No support for the virtual hardware device type '7'.

Completed with errors

When trying to deploy ova via vCenter i got similar error:

Details: Line 60: OVF hardware element Resource Type with instance ID 3. No support for the virtual hardware device type 7.

When looking at the xml file i can see that device type 7 is related to the following:

<rasd:Address>1</rasd:Address>

<rasd:Description>VIRTIO Controller</rasd:Description>

<rasd:ElementName>VIRTIOController 0</rasd:ElementName>

<rasd:InstanceID>3</rasd:InstanceID>

<rasd:ResourceType>7</rasd:ResourceType>

How can i make it working ?

Is there any way to exclude that element from ova file ?
