I'm unable to get ovftool to export a vm from my server that has spaces in the path to the vmx file.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

When I try to export one of my VMs using File/Export/Export OVF Template....it crashes vSphere with a nice assertion window.

To see what the cause of this is, I decided to try using ovftool 2.1.0 on Linux to export the VM instead, to see what happens (like does it crash ovftool?).

I got stuck though because when I log into the vCenter I have to specify a domain\username format and I can't figure out how to pass this to ovftool in a way that doesn't cause errors.

For example, I tried things like this:

# ovftool  vi://myvcenter.domain.com/DataCenterName/vm/

Username:  MYDOMAIN\Administrator

Password: whatever

Didn't work, I don't think it likes the backslash.

So I tried stuffing it in a variable:

# DF="MYDOMAIN\Administrator"

# ovftool  vi://"$DF"@myvcenter.domain.com/DataCenterName/vm/

Error: Curl error: Couldn't connect to server

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm getting the below error when using the OVFtool to convert an OVA file to VMX.

Error:

- Line 38: Unsupported value '16' for element 'VirtualQuantity'.

- Virtual machine has 16 virtual CPUs, but the host only supports 8. The number of virtual CPUs may be limited by the guest OS selected for the virtual machine or by the licensing for the host.

I am trying to solve it using the syntax option --viCpuResource=<shares>:<reservation>:<limit>

However I don't know what to denote in the placeholder <shares>

I have also read the OVFtool user guide, but it does not give any info on the viCpuResource option.

Can anyone give me some guidance here?

I just started exploring the ovf-tools. I have an ovf template available for a VM and I was able to deploy it in Workstation using the GUI.

Is there a way / command available to use this pre-existing .ovf template and deploy a Virtual Machine in workstation using this; through ovf-tool?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm experiencing a coredump when attempting to deploy an OVA into vCenter 5.0.0.  I have downloaded the OVA to the Windows 7 PC locally and have run the ovftool from that path as follows:

I give; I have spent too long attempting to find the magic decoder ring to get ovftool to do what I expect to be a very basic use case.

My vCenter server is win2k8 R2 node, my host node is RHEL6.3, and my guest in this case is CentOS6.3.

The vCenter server FQDN is vsphere2.foo.com.

The ESX host is las13.foo.com.

The guest is qavm1.foo.com

The Datacenter name is screwy, but appears to be passable with URI character replacements.  The name is "Foo / Bar Network" so I have been using "Foo %2f Bar Network" and quoting any URL string to deal with the spaces.

Examining the Datacenter layout in vCenter client, the path to the vm from which I want to create an OVA is

Foo / Bar Network/QA Guy/las13.foo.com/qavm1

attempting to use ovftool from either the Win2k8 server or my RHEL6.4 development machine results in the same errors.  I have perturbed the syntax of options and paths in so many ways I don't want to list them all here, but the end result is always an incorrect reference or missing object.

Might I grovel for the proper syntax to store a VM guest as an OVA?

Yes...I have devoured the manual mutiple times over...RTFM is my first tenet

I have a Linux VM running on fusion, and using ovftool to convert this .vmx into .ovf, then import into a ESXi 5...unfortunately having this error message.

I tried the -lax option, but doesn't help...I look into the ovf file, and found it could be this section issue

I'm trying to create an OVA file from an installed VM.  If I try creating it with ovftool 3.5, it downloads everything completely then gives me the following error:

SHA1 digest of file https://172.31.68.10:443/ha-nfc/52cca89a-6cde-c7a7-0810-25ff2197d3d6/disk-1.iso does not match manifest
and then deletes the file(s) it generated.

I am using compress=0 and --noImageFiles so i don't get the install iso.

If I manually go into Edit Settings and remove the cdrom, then 3.5 creates the ova correctly.

If I use ovftool 2.0, it succeeds even without manually removing the cdrom iso.

I've seen posts where users get the same error I do when they are going ova/f to vm and the answer is to delete the manifest.   Since all of the files are deleted after the error message, I don't have the option to delete the locally created manifest.

Is there a way to keep the files around even after a manifest error?

Does anyone know why ovftool 3.5 would fail in this case and 2.0 would word?  Has there been some deprecation between the two of them?

         I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

Steps followed:

Step 1: Export your virtual machine

The first step is to export your virtual machine from VirtualBox.

Step 2: Editing your .ovf file

The file you need to edit will be the .ovf file that serves as the descriptor for your virtual machine. You MUST open this in a text editor. Do NOT open it in a word processor as this will add extra characters to the file, which will render it unreadable by either VirtualBox or VMWare. The first section you need to edit is the format section. Look for a line of code (near the top) that contains this phrase:

ovf:format=

What follows that section needs to be changed to:

"http://www.vmware.com/interfaces/specifications/vmdk.html#streamOptimized"

The next edit (in the same file) is the Virtual SystemType, and it must be one of the following:

Step 3: Using the OVF tool

This step requires you to download and install the VMWare OVF Tool (you will have to log in first). The OVF tool is command-line only, and it will convert your newly prepped .ovf file into a .vmx that VMWare can use. To do this, follow these steps:

• Click Start | Run.
• Type cmd.
• In the command window, change to the directory you installed the OVF Tool into and then issue the command:ovftool appliance.ovf new_appliance.vmx(Where appliance.ovf is the name of the appliance you exported from VirtualBox and new_appliance.vmx is the name you want to give the new virtual appliance. Depending on the size of your virtual appliance, this could take a while.)

I converted a Virtual Machine installed on a ESX 3.5 server to a virtual

appliance (*.ovf ) file using the OVFTOOL1.0.Now I am trying to

convert this virtual appliance to deploy as a virtual machine on a

different ESX server using same converter 4.0.1 and it is not working.

I get following error

I used ovftool (1.0 running in a RHEL 5.2 VM) to create an ovf of a powered off RHEL 5.1 VM.  All was successful and I can probe the OVF without issue.  However, when I try to import it as a virtual appliance using Virtual Center 2.5 Update 5 I receive:

An error occurred while parsing the OVF descriptor:  Unable to parse xml element 'Envelope'

I've attached the ovf file.

Any ideas?

I exported a VM from my ESXi 4.0.0 server using ovftool for Windows but the type of NIC seems to have been changed as part of the conversion. It was VMXNET3 on the host but ends up being VMXNET in the OVF.

The export was done as follows..

I need access to my deployed virtual machine's serial console, not through a GUI window, but through ssh or telnet.  I finally found how to define a serial console so that I can telnet in, which is perfect, but now I'd like to automate the defining of that serial device without using the vSphere Client GUI.

I can define my serial port from the vSphere Client GUI after deploying my VM by powering off the VM, Edit Settings -> Add a Serial Port, check "Connect via Network" -> Network Backing -> Server (VM listens for connections), Port URI = telnet://10.36.0.85:7001, where 10.36.0.85 is my ESXi 4.1 server's IP address and 7001 is a random port.  When I power on my VM, I can telnet 10.36.0.85 7001 from a remote system and viola, I have serial console/terminal access.

In the vmx file, I can see

  serial0.present = "TRUE"

  serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE"

  serial0.fileType = "network"

  serial0.fileName = "telnet://10.36.0.85:7001"

The question is, how can I define the above either in the ovf file before I deploy, as I deploy (I'm using ovftool from a remote system), or via a remote command afterwards, e.g. a vSphere CLI command?  When I try exporting the ovf template from the vSphere client, I get "Device 'Serial port 1' cannot be exported."

Am I the only one that gets about 10Mbps (Megabits/second), or about 1MB/sec (megabyte/sec) throughput when using the ovftool to import a VM on a 1Gbps LAN?  I would assume there is some type of throttle on the service console network interface, even though I haven't found any evidence from the forums that indicates this is true.  It's just a little strange that we're getting "exactly" 10Mbps.  This happens on multiple vCenter servers and ESX clusters so I'm assuming it's a throttle.  From the one machine I run the ovftool from, I can import to 2 different clusters and get 20Mbps (10Mbps on each).

This is on vCenter 4.0 Update 2 and ESX 4.0 Update 2 (not ESXi) as well as 4.1 versions of these.

Any ideas?

I've been trying to import the ovf-based Oracle storage simulator to ESX4. Also tried importing to Workstation when that failed.

No luck. Not with integrated converter, not with standalone converter, not with ovftool. Changing/removing lines in .ovf file brings me a bit further but still no cigar.

The process stalls at different points, but typically I get an error about unknown OS or unsupported hardware, sometimes a parse error with no additional info.

Has anybody got this working?

The simulator is a virtual-box based Solaris appliance.
