I am setting up an CentOS VM-image, which will be used as an appliance image for our software.
What I want to do is be able to run a setup script after the OVF template is deployed and the system is running. Is it possible? if not, what are possible workarounds?

I have created CentOS VM in ESXi 4.1 server and i have exported this VM into OVF using vSphere Client 4.1 with export OVF option. Because I wanted use and test this same VM in other following VM Ware products.
ESXi 4.0
ESX 4.0/4.1
VM Player / Fusion.
Here my question is that , Can we use this OVF (generated through export option in vSphere Client 4.1) in the above all VMWare products to create VM? is it compatable with all the VM Products?
Please let me know your inputs and suggestions on this.

I'm trying to export a few VMs to OVF. Successfully I've exported 3 machines but another export finished with error "Failed to export Virtual Machine:Insufficient system resources exists to complete the requested services". I've checked destination drive for free space and there is enough space.
Any ideas ?

Hi. I'm trying to deploy an OVF template using Vsphere 4.1 client but it keeps failing with syntax errors. The OVF is supplied with an IBM product I've trying to install but there's something it doesn't like relating to the ValueMap section which is a single line in the OVF file. Any ideas what's wrong with it? Thx

I was wondering if I should include direct support for VirtualBox into ovftool.
Is this something that will be used?
I was planning on doing it as source only as:
ovftool /path_to_vbox_file/vm.vbox /tmp/foo.ovf
I was also wondering if kvm support could be needed?

I'm experiencing a coredump when attempting to deploy an OVA into vCenter 5.0.0. I have downloaded the OVA to the Windows 7 PC locally and have run the ovftool from that path as follows:

I am atempting to connect to a vcloud instance to download an OVF and no matter what I cannot authenticate. Even if I manually input the userid and password it continues to prompt for them. I have creayed a userid and password specifically for this task local to the vcloud and the password and username don't conatin ANY special characters.
Any ideas?

Not sure whats wrong with this command, I don't have special character in my password or username
please note that 14.23.12.34 is a linux machine and both source and target are in same machine and Im executing ovftool command in same linux machine.

I'm getting the below error when using the OVFtool to convert an OVA file to VMX.
Error:
- Line 38: Unsupported value '16' for element 'VirtualQuantity'.
- Virtual machine has 16 virtual CPUs, but the host only supports 8. The number of virtual CPUs may be limited by the guest OS selected for the virtual machine or by the licensing for the host.
I am trying to solve it using the syntax option --viCpuResource=<shares>:<reservation>:<limit>
However I don't know what to denote in the placeholder <shares>
I have also read the OVFtool user guide, but it does not give any info on the viCpuResource option.
Can anyone give me some guidance here?

I am using vSphere ESX (4 or 5).
I am writing automatic scripts using esxcfg and ovftool (on windows) commands.
I have some questions:
1. How can i create Resource Pool's? (if it cannot be done using ovftool, is there another way? maybe using esxcfg?)
2. What is the exact syntax of ovftool to deploy under that Resource Pool?
I am looking for something like this:
ovftool --noImageFiles -ds=dsName --net:"Network1"="Network2" --name=MyVM "C:/MyVM.ovf" "vi://user:password@192.168.1.1/Resource/myResource"
or anything else that can help.

Hi all. I'm trying to archive some no-longer-used VMs with ovftool, and I've managed to save half of them. The ovftool output looks like:

The other half of the machines fail with the mysterious vim.fault.FileNotFound without saying which file isn't found. I've looked at the settings for both successful and unsuccessful VMs and cannot figure out what the difference is:

Hey all. I know I am using proper syntax, but it seems like there's a missing service running on my esx cluster. I am able to log in with vSphere, but cannot use ovftool to export a stopped server in my ESX 4.0 cluster environment.
command I am using:
ovftool vi://[username]:[password]@vi://192.168.77.111/[serverid] d:\[serveridoutput].ovf
the error I am receiving is as follows:
Error: Could not lookup host: [username]
Completed with errors
Now it's interesting because the server does seem to know that I am using a proper user/pass because if I make a mistake on the password, I am given another chance to log in, until I miss three tries. If I enter the correct password, it seems to almost connect, then fails out with the above error. I would *REALLY* appreciate some help with this guys.

I am having problem with automation script because the string passed in the ovftool command uses credential vsphere.local\userXYZ instead of just userXYZ
It appears that the backsplash in the 'vsphere.local\user' cause the command line to be misinterpreted, so the automation script that calls ovftool to deploy VMs kept failing. It erred with "cURL error of ‘couldn’t resolve hostname" even though there is nothing wrong with any hosts or hostname resolution on the network.
On a Win-based vCenter I was able to reconfigure it so that instead of requiring login user format of 'vsphere.local\userXYZ', it will now accept user = 'userXYZ'.
With that change, ovftool.exe command string is now progress correctly and VMs are deployed.
I could reconfigure Window-based vCenter to not use just user = userXYZ (instead of vsphere.local\account), but I could not figure out how to get vCSA to stop requiring the format of vsphere.local\userXYZ.
The string segment in the long ovftool.exe command line looked like this …
This works:
"vi://userXYZ:password@tm-vcenter55/DC2-SJ/host/Topology/csg-sj-esxi112.cisco.com"
This does not work:
"vi://vsphere.local\userXYZ:password@lin-vcenter55/DC2-SJ/host/Topology/csg-sj-esxi111.cisco.com"
Is there anyway to configure vCenter Virtual Appliance to use log in format of user = userXYZ instead of user = vsphere.local\userXYZ? Or is there some way of reformatting the string so that OS can interpret it correctly even with backsplash '\' is used in the string?

So long story short I'm building a self deployment install using a Kickstart script that after the install uses wget to copyy the OVA files to the local data store and then deploys the OVAs, i have the script figured out however i can't seem to get ovftool installed on ESXi 5.5, everytime i try to run it i get the following error

Fellows,
We just imported an .ova file using the vSphere Client GUI
successfully. But when we try to power on the VM, the VM console only shows
"A disk error" and nothing else. This is a time-sensitive production
pilot and does not look good!
Anyone experienced this before? Couldn't find anything on
the topic.
The .ova was created using the same version of vCenter at
another site.

I am currently trying to deploy a OVF template that points to a VMDK of createType=monolithicFlat. At the time of deployment I get an error ..
Failed to deploy OVF package: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error
There are other posts in this forum that point to incorrect sizes in the OVF file as one of the potential issues. But none of these seem to correspond to VMDKs of monolithicFlat type. I have listed below the References and DiskSection of my OVF file and VMDK file descriptor. I will appreciate it if someone can point out potential errors.

ovftool fails with a connection problem. The error message is below.
Error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly
respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connect
ed host has failed to respond.
I have exported an VM to an ovf and put it in a folder on a 2003 windows server. I then created a web folder in IIS 6, and turned on folder browsing. When I put the url path in vSphere to import the ovf, I get a 404 error from IIS. Is there a way to publish an ovf to IIS6?
