ovftool fails with Error: vim.fault.FileNotFound

I have an esxi 4.1 server that we are decommissioning as part of a move.  We've decided to archive some of the VMs that were part of a test bed, in case we need to revive them later.  I've been copying the VMs directly to a USB hard drive on my Mac with ovftool, but I've found that about half of the testbed VMs cannot be copied.  Here is an example of a failure:

wpeters$ ovftool vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/Riverbed/VSH_markt /Volumes/Archive/VSH_markt.ova

Enter login information for source vi://zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/

Username: root

Password: *********

Opening VI source: vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net:443/Riverbed/VSH_markt

Error: vim.fault.FileNotFound

Completed with errors

And a success, on another VM:

wpeters$ ovftool vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/Riverbed/VSH_250m /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Enter login information for source vi://zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/

Username: root

Password: *********

Opening VI source: vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net:443/Riverbed/VSH_250m

Opening OVA target: /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Writing OVA package: /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Transfer Completed

Completed successfully

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for?  I've started and stopped these VMs from the console, so I'm certain the storage is still available, etc.

Thanks!

How do I keep vmxnet3 NIC type when exporting to OVF/OVA

Hi,

I exported a VM from my ESXi 4.0.0 server using ovftool for Windows but the type of NIC seems to have been changed as part of the conversion. It was VMXNET3 on the host but ends up being VMXNET in the OVF.

The export was done as follows..

 ovftool --eula@=c:\MyEULA --powerOffSource vi://root:password@esxi4_host/MyVapp d:\dev\vapps\

Snippet from the original .vmx

ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

Snippet from the .ovf that was generated

   <VirtualHardwareSection>
...snip..      <Item>        <rasd:AddressOnParent>7</rasd:AddressOnParent>        <rasd:AutomaticAllocation>true</rasd:AutomaticAllocation>        <rasd:Connection>VM Network</rasd:Connection>        <rasd:Description>VmxNet ethernet adapter on "VM Network"</rasd:Description>        <rasd:ElementName>ethernet0</rasd:ElementName>        <rasd:InstanceID>6</rasd:InstanceID>        <rasd:ResourceSubType>VmxNet</rasd:ResourceSubType>        <rasd:ResourceType>10</rasd:ResourceType>
...snip..    </VirtualHardwareSection>

Is this a known issue ? Any workarounds ?

OVFTOOL Deployment - syntax determination problem

$

I have a vApp which consists of an OVF file and three VMDK files, one for each VM.  All VMDK files are co-resident with the OVF file.

NOTE:  This vApp deploys successfully from vSphere 4.0 client.

I am attempting to deploy the vApp using OVFTOOL.  However, I am unable to derive the proper OVFTOOL syntax.

  • Potentially pertinent facts:  Datacenter is clustered; OVF to be deployed has multiple VMs, OVFTOOL version is 1.0.0

Using the command below, when the vApp already exists, produces a "specified parameter" error as shown.

  • ovftool --acceptAllEulas --datastore=(dsid)
           --net:"HOST-A Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-B Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-C Network 1"=VMNET2
           appliance.ovf vi://(VSERVER)/(DATACENTER)/vm/(FOLDER)/(vAPP)

Opening OVF source: appliance.ovf
Warning: No manifest file
Please enter login information for target vi://VSERVER/
Username: DOMAIN
USER
Password: *********
Opening VI target: vi://DOMAIN
USER@VSERVER/DATACENTER/vm/FOLDER/vAPP
Error:
- A specified parameter was not correct.
folder

Using the same command as above, when the vApp does not already exist, produces a "does not refer to an object" error.

Error: Locator does not refer to an object: vi://DOMAIN
USER@VSERVER/DATACENTER/vm/FOLDER/vAPP

However, if I change the command to deploy to a target "folder", an error message appears, indicating a "wrong kind of object" error:

  • ovftool --acceptAllEulas --datastore=(dsid)
           --net:"HOST-A Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-B Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-C Network 1"=VMNET2
           appliance.ovf vi://(VSERVER)/(DATACENTER)/vm/(FOLDER)

&lt;snip&gt;
Error: Found wrong kind of object (Folder)

Assuming my first syntax is the correct one, the " - A specified parameter was not correct. (/p) folder" message throws me.  It seems inappropriate to the command.

I've tried several variations but no luck so far. I'm not seeing anything specific in the documentation as far as special handling in the cases of deployment of multiple-VM OVFs or deployment to clusters.  I tried looking at the commands with the debug parameters "--X:logToConsole --X:logLevel=trivial" , but saw nothing immediately helpful (to me anyway :P).

What should my expected target be for this... vApp or folder?  Should the vApp exist, or not?  Am I missing something else entirely?

thanks for any input,

iso to ovf/ova? Can it be done?

Hi I'm wondering if there is an automation tool/command(s) that will allow us (team of developers) to import/use a .iso file that contains 64bit OS and pass it through VMware ESXi or Server and then export it to OVF/OVA?

Is it possible? Can it be done?

Your answers will be very apreciated, many thanks!

Create OVF with flat vmdk

Hey,

I'm trying to build a utility that builds an OVF, given a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk with the descriptor. But I've found that only streamOptimized disks will export properly, however they only take embedded descriptors. I'm using VSphere 4 to deploy an ovf.

In the ovf, I have the disk format to be ovf:format="http://www.vmware.com/interfaces/specifications/vmdk.html#streamOptimized". This works perfectly fine until VSphere gets to reading the vmdk file where it gives the error message "Error uploading file C:\path\to\scsi0_0.vmdk to server. I/O exception while reading VMDK header", where the header is,

# Disk DescriptorFile
version=1
CID=fffffffe
parentCID=ffffffff
createType=streamOptimized
# Extend description
RW 16777216 FLAT "scsi0_0-flat.vmdk"
# The Disk Data Base
#DDB
ddb.virtualHWVersion = "7"
ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic"
ddb.geometry.heads = "64"
ddb.geometry.sectors = "32"
ddb.geometry.cylinders = "8192"

I guess my question is, does deploying ovfs support any other format other than streamOptimized where I can use a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk?

Thank you,

Kyle

ofv. ofvtool.

from the man help page:

ovftool "vi://username:pass@my_vc_server/my_datacenter?ds=\
           [Storage1] foo/foo.vmx" c:\ovfs\
   (VM on ESX/vCenter server to OVF using datastore location query)

not really sure what the "my_datacenter" really is but found a few posts here that had "ha-datacenter" in that place so i tried getting an ovf like this:

C:\caca>ovftool -tt=ovf "vi://user:pass@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ha-datacenter?ds=[datastore1] caca01a/caca01a.vmx" cacas.ovf
Opening VI source: vi://user@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ha-datacenter
Opening OVF target: cacas.ovf
Writing OVF package: cacas.ovf
Disk Transfer Completed

[haaaanging - no prompt.....]

Terminate process signal received - aborting operation^C

C:\caca>

C:\caca>

........

i got [datastore1] caca01a/caca01a.vmx from the properties off the vsphere for that vm. did this a few times...

what happens is instead of the generation of an ovf file i get something that ends with .vmdk. and the process hangs without getting back to the prompt....

my question is: why? what has to happened to get an ovf file?

i shall appreciate an answer...

ovftool - Defining the 'Product', 'Version' and 'Vendor'?

$

Hi,

Am trying to export an ova from a VM using ovftool.  Something along the lines of...

ovftool --prop:Version=100 --privateKey=./id_rsa.pem --eula@=./eula.txt vi://root:mypass@myserver.mydomain.com/myVM ./myOVA.ova

Everything looks good except that I haven't been able to define the 'Product', 'Version' and 'Vendor'  that appears in the initial dialog when customers deploy the template into a running ESX / vCenter instance.

Assume this must be a v common question but have not found how this might be done from the ovftool user guide (http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/ovf/ovf301/ovftool-301-userguide.pdf) or the VMware communities.  Closest I've found is http://communities.vmware.com/thread/328504 which indicates that defining a vCenter vApp allow configurable properties to be set.

Is there any way to define these parameters via ovftool?  If not, is there a way to hack the .ova manually to define them?

Thanks in advance,

Frank.

Deploy OVF Template in VMWare Workstation 10 using ovf-tool

Hi All,

I just started exploring the ovf-tools. I have an ovf template available for a VM and I was able to deploy it in Workstation using the GUI.

Is there a way / command available to use this pre-existing .ovf template and deploy a Virtual Machine in workstation using this; through ovf-tool?

Any help would be appreciated.

ovftool: VirtualBox to vSphere with vmxnet3 driver

$

Hi all,

I have a VirtualBox OVA file that I'd like to convert to vSphere with vmxnet3 driver.

I've ran my VBOX OVA file against ovftool with --lax option to avoid the "unknown hardware virtualbox-2.2" issue which produces VMX and VMDISK file.

Is there a way for OVFTOOL to change the network adapter to use vmxnet3 as opposed to "just open the VMX file and edit virtualDev section"?

Thanks,

Ed

I want to clone a VMware VM (RHEL6.5), export it as an OVF and when someone deploys it again, I want them to enter custom information like IP, DNS, VM name in the vSphere Deploy wizard. How do i make this happen? (I've commented all the lines in the persistent net rules file and made the file read-only.)

ovftool doesn't support pvscsi?

I have a VM running on ESX 4.0 which using pvscsi disks. I tried to export it into an OVF package but I got an error message said that 'pvscsi' is unsupported virtual hardware device.

I have two questions:

1. Is there any other options I have except to modify the VM to use 'lsilogic'?

2. Will ovftool support pvscsi in the future?

Thanks in advance!

OVA template deployment - sysprepping and customizing the deployment

$

Hello,

I am seeking guidance on automation\customization of an OVA deployment.

Looking to use an OVA due to it's compression ability which is favorable when needing to transfer a VMWare virtual machine from Host to Host for deployment at different location across a WAN.  In the past, we have created a VM template and provided customization file for deployment but the size of the template was too large for transfer across the WAN....so we would have to ship on seperate media.

I am looking to achieve the same end result of deployment of a vm template but through the deployment of the OVA template.

Here is where I am at so far:
1. Create the VM (in this case Windows XP SP3)
2. Export the VM to OVA Template.
3. Deploy OVA Template

All of the above works without any problem.  However, during deployment of the OVA, I would like to prompt the end user to input computer name, Fixed IP information or DHCP, domain to join, etc.  Additionally, I would like sysprep to run.

I have read the guide and numerous articles on the OVF descriptors, but not quite sure where or how to input these prompts so they appear during the OVA deployment.  Additionally, if I sysprep the vm before exporting to OVA, how can I get sysprep and the input from the end user deployment to work hand in hand.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or tutorial reference you can supply to help me understand OVA deployment of a single vm and how to configure custom settings during deployment with sysprep running.

Error loading Operating System

I recently had an issue where I exported a VM as an OVF using the vSphere client, a few weeks later I needed to import the VM back into our environment and after importing I received an "Error loading Operating System" error.  I have imported and exported countless VMs as OVF files, and this is very frustrating.  I also have VMs sent to me from Government entities and I always express how they should send them as an OVF file since it makes it very easy for me to import.  Recently I had 1 out of 3 errors after the import with the same "Error loading Operating System" message.

I have tried to change the HD controller on the VM, I also created a New VM with the "custom" option and I chose the exact OS and vHardware for the VM, and I tried to use the existing .vmdk files and that does not work.  I'm just wondering if there is some simple fix out there for what I thought was a simple import and export.

I'm using ESXi 4.1 Update 2 on HP BL hardware...oh, I also have VMware Workstation 8, and I can mount the vmdk files.

OVF environment not available

Hi, I'm having a problem with ovftool. I'm running ovftool against a ESXi host with a trial license. The command shows the ovf properties that I've set on the commandline, but once I'm on the virtual machine, the ovf environment is not present at all. If I do the deployment through the vSphere client, it works perfectly, same OVA file.

I see the output from ovftool:

--> /prop/ip0 = "192.168.43.159"

--> /prop/ip1 = "192.168.43.185"

but also get the warnings:

Warning:

- OVF property with key: 'ip1' does not exists.
Thanks for any help!
