Script or tool to export VM from ESX 3.5 in OVF 0.9 Format?

$

The subject sez it all!  I want to find an automated way to snag the 0.9-format OVFs of VMs that are on a Legacy 3.5 ESX Server. Can anyone suggest a method for this?  Everything I've tried so far always gets me OVF 1.0 files, that I can't use because of some other tools that need 0.9 as the input.

Thanks, CJ

OVA to VMX using OVFTool in Mac OSx Terminal Problem

$

Hello,

I am new to OVFTool  and am having difficulty using it in Terminal on my MacBook Pro to convert an OVA (created by exporting my WinXp virtual machine from within VirtualBox), to a VMX file for use in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro.

I have installed the OVFTool on my boot drive (partition) which is named "LFP OS", in the folder:  /Library/VMWare/OVFTool/.

I have the OVA file on my data drive (partition) which is named "LFP Data" in the folder: /Virtual Machines/WinXP.ova.

I want to create a virtual machine file (VMX) in the same location as the soure that I can then import into VMWare Fusion.  I have gone through the OVFTool User Guide, forums, Google etc. and cannot get it to work properly.  It may be as simple as my Terminal syntax being off.  Anyway, please help.

Here is what I used in Terminal:

LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$ pwd
/volumes/lfp data/virtual machines
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$ ./Volumes/LFP\ OS/Library/VMWare/OVFTool/ovftool /Volumes/LFP\ Data/Virtual\ Machines/WinXP.ova /Volumes/LFP\ Data/Virtual\ Machines/WinXP.vmx
-bash: ./Volumes/LFP OS/Library/VMWare/OVFTool/ovftool: No such file or directory
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$

Thanks for your time!

OVF Import Virtual Disks to Various Datastores

$

Hello,

I have scoured documentation to see if there was anyway to define multiple datastores on OVF imports.  There are a few machines in the inventory that have virtual disks in various datastores.  I definitely didn't see any options to select anything besides one datastore via the GUI and I am struggling to find a solution via ovatool.exe (2.1.0)

I'm starting to doubt this capability exists but I would be delighted if I was wrong, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Bug in GET requests for ovftool 2.1.0?

Hello All,

Would like to submit the possibility of a bug in ovftool 2.1.0.  Keeping things simple, we have a "fileserver" of ovfs/vmdks and our commands to ovftool started breaking after ugrading to 2.1.0 (from 2.0.1).

We dug up the command that prints out the debug info and found the (as our server logs showed), ovftool makes to GET requests to the source URL for the ovf (for whatever reason).  The second of these seems is mal-formatted in 2.1.0.  For comparison, I've also included similar outout from 2.0.1.

Our (neutered) deploy string: /usr/bin/ovftool  --lax --machineOutput --name='vm_test1' --datastore='store1' --net:'NOWHERE'='dev' http://fileserver/file/vm.ovf vi://root:password@esxihost

Get requests (2.1.0):

2011-11-14T16:04:55.413-05:00 [7FB4D5C7B700 verbose 'Default'] CURL: => Send header GET /file/vm.ovf HTTP/1.1

--> User-Agent: VMware-client/4.0.0 (ovfTool; libcurl)

...

2011-11-14T16:04:55.420-05:00 [7FB4D5BF7700 verbose 'Default'] CURL: => Send header GET /file//vm.ovf HTTP/1.1

--> User-Agent: VMware-client/4.0.0 (ovfTool; libcurl)

Apache file server handles the extra slash ok, but our other serving option using Phusion Passenger does not, and returns a 404, which causes ovftool to return

Convert ovf template to vsx

Hello ,

I used the vcenter 4.1 console to Export OVF Template.  We need to be able to load this template in vmware player.  I downloaded ovftool and tried to convert the OVF template so that it could be run in Vmware player.

This is the command I am issuing to convert the template based off of the OVFTOOL PDF.  This, to my understanding should convert the OVF to a VMX and drop it in the D:\vms folder.  There are 4 disks in this VM server

Input

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool>ovftool -tt=vmx D:\server_name\server_name.ovf D:\vms\

Output:

Opening OVF source: D:\server\server.ovf
The manifest validates
Opening VMX target: D:\vms\
Warning:
- Target does not support CPU validation.
Error:
-
Completed with errors

Needless to say the VMS folder is getting created but nothing else is being converted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

hello.

I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

         Anybody has any idea? Thanks.

OVF used for backup and restore?

$

Hello,

I am brand new to the OVF Tool and am currently reading the documentation and experimenting with the utility.

I would like to know if the OVF Tool is a good utility for performing VM backups (copies) in a vSphere environment.

It is not clear, if that is one of the intended uses of the OVF Tool.

How would one accomplish this (backup and restore later) with the OVF Tool command line utility?

1)  Convert vmx config file to ovf (what happens to the original vmx file and the vmdk, vmxf, nvram, etc... files?)

Once you have an ovf package, what is the best way to import it (restore the VM)?  If you use the "Deploy OVF Template" feature in vSphere client, does it launch a wizard that prompts you for all the required meta configuration?  Do you need to remember certain config settings from when you created the OVF package?

Thanks for any insight as I come up to speed with the OVF Tool.

Thanks,

Bryan

Do I have a syntax error or is there something else that I am missing?

Large OVF imports into vCloud Director 1.0.1 fail, smaller imports succeed

$

I'm getting wildly different results while importing large OVF file into vCloud Director 1.0.1 via the ovftool than when performing the upload of the same OVF via the native JAva tool within vCloud Director itself. AS long as the file transfer compeltes through the vCD Java tool, the file is importing into vCenter correctly, and then being correctly registered within vCD.

The OVF I'm working with is 68.2 GB in size.

Below is a sanatized version of my command line and the output from the tool:

ovftool --net:"dvportgroup-48=company-Services_Internal" E:\OlioWebtest\oliowebtest.ovf "vcloud://user:password@testvcd1.company.com:443/?org=company_Services&vapp=OlioWebTest&vdc=company_Services_ALLO_vDC01&catalog=test"
Opening OVF source: E:\OlioWebtest\oliowebtest.ovf
The manifest validates
Warning: File is not referred in the manifest: oliowebtest.ovf

Waiting for task on server .done
Deploying to vCloud: vcloud://user@testvcd1.company.com:443/
Disk Transfer Completed

Error: Invalid response from server
Completed with errors

Looking in the vCD GUI logs for the organization, I see the descriptor being processed, and the process for finalizing the upload completing, but the vApp is never added to the catalog. If I look in vCenter, I can find the VM on a valdi datastore for the org vDC and the correct resource pool in the proper state for a catalog vApp. The error "Error: Invalid response from server" is displayed immediately upon completion of the data transfer.

If I move the VM to the root of the datacenter, I can import the VM as a vApp and copy it to the caalog with no issue.

I tested with a much smaller OVF (1.3 GB), and received exactly the behavior I expected.

ovftool --net:"none=company-Services_Internal" E:\suse\descriptor.ovf "vcloud://user:password@testvcd1.company.com:443/?org=company_Services&vapp=SUSE32&vdc=company_Services_ALLO_vDC01&catalog=test"

Looking at the succesful transfer, I see an additonal action logged in the GUI logs for the organization. After the finalization record, there is a "Create virtual application" event logged on the smaller transfer that is never logged on the larger transfer.

The only item I can think of from a vCloud Director standpoint is that that vCD logon sesion timeout has expired on the large transfer long before the additional tasks are issued to vCD resulting in the invalid response. Is this the case, or is something else going on?

When looking at the vcloud-container-info.log file on the cells doing the processing for the succesful imports, I see a whole string of commands being executed in the current logged on user context.

Hi,

I am new to the virtualization world and was wondering if any of have come across anything like this:

I am receiving a *.ubf file from another dev group, which I successfully import via vSphere.

Now I am trying to automate this by importing the same file with the ovftool and I get the error:

"Error: Failed to open OVF descriptor"

Any help would be highly appreciated.

I am trying to deploy OVAs using ovftool 3.0.1 to an ESXi 5.1 host. When deploying VCSA 5.1.0b it works as expected with the following command:

"/Applications/VMware OVF Tool/ovftool" --acceptAllEulas --skipManifestCheck --name=vsm -dm=thin -ds=datastore1 "--net:Network 1=VM Network" --powerOn ~/Downloads/VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5300-947940_OVF10.ova vi://root:password@esx01.local
If I try with vShield Manager I get the following error:
"/Applications/VMware OVF Tool/ovftool" --acceptAllEulas --skipManifestCheck --name=vsm -dm=thin -ds=datastore1 "--net:VSMgmt=VM Network" --powerOn ~/Downloads/VMware-vShield-Manager-5.1.2-943471.ova vi://root:password@esx01.local

I have confirmed that I can deploy the OVA manually. I have also confirmed the MD5SUM and tried the --disableVerification flag on ovftool. Any idea what I am missing?

ovftool: Conversion to monolithic sparse image fails with a Vapp ovf file

Hi,

We have been trying to create the monolithicSparse Image for the Vapp Ovf using the following OVF Tool command-Line Options

/usr/bin/ovftool --acceptAllEulas -dm=monolithicSparse Test_Vapp.ovf NEW_Vapp.vmdk

But the Ovf tool fails to do the conversion with the following message

Error: OVF Package is not supported by target.

We have also tried validating the Vapp ovf file using the ovftool schemaValidate and did not find any issues with this.

Please let us know if the Ovf tool supports conversion for multiple virtual machines (i.e support for Vapp OVF)

Thanks in advance

Custom OVF Property in my Virtual appliance

$

I'm trying to create an additional property in my VM that I build with VMware Studio so that I can use OVFTool to pass a value for the property when I deploy the VM to a vCenter.

The property looks like that shown in red.  But when I invoke OVFTool to give a value to this property, what am I supposed to be using?

Something like this I can't get to work:

    ovftool  <...>  --prop.ConfigurationManagementServer.My_VM_Name= 10.1.2.3   <..>

Thanks for any hints,

CJ
