Hi i've an OVF virtual appliance with hardware version 4 how can i upgrade it to hardware version 7 and convert to OVA as well? it seems ovftools does not have the ability to upgrade to a higher hardware version.

Any suggestions how i can perform such a task?

Thanks for any info

how to deploy ova/ovf into VMware Player?

hello.

         I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

         Anybody has any idea? Thanks.

Best Regards,

I'm having some trouble getting the vSphere Client to import my OVF's. When using the vSphere Client, I successfully walk through the wizard to "Deploy OVF Template" then get the following error:

"Failed to deploy OVF package: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error"

Sometimes the error is a timeout error but this is very infrequent (I failed to capture the output).

In the Event log I see this error roughly 2 minutes after the import:

Deploy OVF template

I can convert my OVF back to VMX format.

VMware ovftool 1.0.0 (build-166674). The command I'm executing is simply: ovftool "xxxx.vmx" "yyy.ovf"

It looks like a possible timeout issue on the cliet side, but I've reset the timeout (Edit->Client Settings->Client-Server command timeout = 600).  This didn't seem to have any impact on the problem.

Thanks for any help.

VMware's ovftool doesn't install/work on VMware vMA 4.0?

$

Tried to install 64bit ovftool on VMware vMA 4.0 today and it failed to install or yield any useful information:

[vi-admin@scofield]$ ./VMware-ovftool-installer-1.0.0-166674-lin.x86_64.sh

VMware OVF Tool installer script
Copyright VMware 2009
.........extracting archive........

Checksum validation failed for archive.
(If you use FTP, make sure to set it to binary mode)

As far as I can tell, the binary is actually included in the install script though I'm not sure why 'FTP' is being referenced here unless VMware is expecting to download the actual source? I would hope that since vMA is a VMware virtual appliance that it should support any "VMwae" utilities but from what I've seen in the past with VDDK and VIX, that is not always and generally is not the case.

Can anyone comment on or know how to get it to install?

Thanks for your time

Export ESXi VM using ovftool in Linux

$

Hello,

I am trying to use the ovftool in Linux to export a VM running on ESXi 4.0 to an OVF package with the following syntax:

$ovftool "vi://root@192.168.X.XXX?ds=[datastore1]test-vm/test-vm.vmx" /home/ovfs/test1.ovf

But I always get the error: Datacenter object not found

The path to the vmx file is:

test-vm/test-vm.vmx

If I have a standalone ESXi (no vCenter present) what Datacenter name should I use?, I have tried with "Datacenter", "Default" but nothing seems to work.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

ovftool -- mapping multiple nics with same network name to different network names

Is there a way to map network devices that are both associated with "VM Network" in the ova to different networks on the target?  The ova contains only "VM Network", but I would like to put one interface on "NET_A" and one on "NET_B".

Error: Invalid access to memory location - Fix an OVA?

I have a VM that I exported as an OVA as a "Just in Case" backup a while ago.  Today I had to use it and I cannot import it.

There was an ISO mounted when I did the export and it exported the ISO as well.  The error I get is when it tries to access the ISO, it fails.

I downloaded OVFtool in the hopes I could strip the ISO from the OVA, but I am getting an error trying to use the --noImageFiles option.  it tells me:

E:\ESX\OVA's>ovftool --noImageFiles Win7-Tax64.ova test.ova
Opening OVA source: Win7-Tax64.ova
Opening OVA target: test.ova
Writing OVA package: test.ova
Disk Transfer Failed
Error: Invalid access to memory location.
Completed with errors

Is it possible to remove this ISO?

After searching through the forum I uninstalled OVFtool from my E: drive and put it on C: with the same result.  Here is the logToConsole:

E:\ESX\OVA's>ovftool --X:logToConsole Win7-Tax64.ova test.ova

Maximum (realistic) sizes for OVA/OVF format and export?

$

Hi- has anyone hit any problems with exporting large (e.g. > 1TB) VMs in OVA/OVF format?

I realise that you can split the files generated, but leaving aside any issues to do with the file-system on which the files reside, are there any inherent gotchas with the export mechanism or the file format that would mean it's not a good idea to rely on this for exporting large VMs...?

Thanks!

We are working on a project that analyzes datacenter utilization and decides how to optimize VMs. We just released our VMware data collector. The data collectors continuously gets utilization data from your VMs and sends the data to our server. The data you provide will help improve our modeling and optimization engine. We only collect block box VM utilization metrics and we have no idea what is running in your datacenter. If you would like to participate, our data collector can be found here:

VMware Workstation Natively

okay, I know this isn't developed yet, but I thought I would ask about.

first I love VMware workstation, amazing tool. and most VMware products are quick and easy for the average user.

okay to meat of the topic. What would it take to install VMware natively withOUT a host operating system"

hear me out. I really love virtualization, and the option it gives to run ANY OS, but the drawback would be the HOST OS, I WISH there was a way to install a very simple OS that VMware creates or uses, to launch it's workstation. maybe call it "LiteStation". then with the same use of the workstation, load your OS, or OS's in many cases, being able to with such a low foot print might be able to open some doors for new technology.

now, the simple OS, it need limited capabilities, like driver install (preferably win drivers as they are the most common and most ready, but Linux drivers would be the most understandable), limited programs or possibly no program installs. but it need enough to use the full potential of the machine, so x64 would be required along with VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI + acceleration etc.... with no browsers there won't be a need to install much security, just force it to connect, but not use the network connection except to switch it over to bridge the OS's in VM-LS.

I'm sure this software is not out there yet. but think of the possibilities, it would become a 'virtual' boot-loader... running all OS's in a virtual environment, utilizing the max potential of multi-platform. I could see the diminish of speed as we allocate a % of the native hardware for use by the VM's, but still. No longer would dual booting be a norm, having to restart just to use a different OS, but booting both would increase. sure we have native, but sometimes I don't want to mess with Win/Lin/OS just to get to the one I want. and I feel the native OS limits the use of the virtual machine.

or maybe something like this is already running.... I just haven't found out.

Anyways thanks for the listening... who knows maybe VMware might want to implement something like LiteStation in their software arsenal....

I have an esxi 4.1 server that we are decommissioning as part of a move.  We've decided to archive some of the VMs that were part of a test bed, in case we need to revive them later.  I've been copying the VMs directly to a USB hard drive on my Mac with ovftool, but I've found that about half of the testbed VMs cannot be copied.  Here is an example of a failure:

wpeters$ ovftool vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/Riverbed/VSH_markt /Volumes/Archive/VSH_markt.ova

Enter login information for source vi://zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/

Username: root

Password: *********

Opening VI source: vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net:443/Riverbed/VSH_markt

And a success, on another VM:

wpeters$ ovftool vi://root@zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/Riverbed/VSH_250m /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Enter login information for source vi://zeus.dvt.tachyon.net/

Opening OVA target: /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Writing OVA package: /Volumes/Archive/VSH_250m.ova

Transfer Completed

Completed successfully

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for?  I've started and stopped these VMs from the console, so I'm certain the storage is still available, etc.

Thanks!

Defining serial port Without the GUI

$

0

I need access to my deployed virtual machine's serial console, not through a GUI window, but through ssh or telnet.  I finally found how to define a serial console so that I can telnet in, which is perfect, but now I'd like to automate the defining of that serial device without using the vSphere Client GUI.

I can define my serial port from the vSphere Client GUI after deploying my VM by powering off the VM, Edit Settings -> Add a Serial Port, check "Connect via Network" -> Network Backing -> Server (VM listens for connections), Port URI = telnet://10.36.0.85:7001, where 10.36.0.85 is my ESXi 4.1 server's IP address and 7001 is a random port.  When I power on my VM, I can telnet 10.36.0.85 7001 from a remote system and viola, I have serial console/terminal access.

In the vmx file, I can see

  serial0.present = "TRUE"

  serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE"

  serial0.fileType = "network"

  serial0.fileName = "telnet://10.36.0.85:7001"

The question is, how can I define the above either in the ovf file before I deploy, as I deploy (I'm using ovftool from a remote system), or via a remote command afterwards, e.g. a vSphere CLI command?  When I try exporting the ovf template from the vSphere client, I get "Device 'Serial port 1' cannot be exported."

I am trying to create an OVF from a vm in vsphere - I'm running ovftool on a linux machine, and using the following syntax (I got this from the ovftool users guide):

ovftool username@myvcenter.aaa.com/"datacenter name"/vm/vmname /local/path/tostoreit/vnname.ovf

It prompts for a password, I enter the password, and it comes back with:

Opening VI source: vi://username@myvcenter.aaa.com/datacenter name/vmname
Error: Locator does not refer to an object:vi://username@myvcenter.aaa.com/datacenter name/vmname

Incidentally, I get the exact same error when I try using the mac version of ovftool, and the windows version.

Please help - I know this should work. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I have to get this working pretty fast.

Thank you!!

Create OVF with flat vmdk

Hey,

I'm trying to build a utility that builds an OVF, given a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk with the descriptor. But I've found that only streamOptimized disks will export properly, however they only take embedded descriptors. I'm using VSphere 4 to deploy an ovf.

In the ovf, I have the disk format to be ovf:format="http://www.vmware.com/interfaces/specifications/vmdk.html#streamOptimized". This works perfectly fine until VSphere gets to reading the vmdk file where it gives the error message "Error uploading file C:\path\to\scsi0_0.vmdk to server. I/O exception while reading VMDK header", where the header is,

# Disk DescriptorFile
version=1
CID=fffffffe
parentCID=ffffffff
createType=streamOptimized
# Extend description
RW 16777216 FLAT "scsi0_0-flat.vmdk"
# The Disk Data Base
#DDB
ddb.virtualHWVersion = "7"
ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic"
ddb.geometry.heads = "64"
ddb.geometry.sectors = "32"
ddb.geometry.cylinders = "8192"

I guess my question is, does deploying ovfs support any other format other than streamOptimized where I can use a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk?

Thank you,

Kyle

Hello,

I'm attempting to do a vmware to ovf converstion.  However, I'm receiving some fairly generic errors from ovftool and was hoping I could get some help.

Here are the console messages when I attempt to convert:

[root@provisionvrpt ~]# /usr/bin/ovftool --machineOutput --X:logToConsole=true /var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/vm/test.vmx /var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/vmovf/test.ovf

vmware-vdiskmanager -R /var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/vm/test.vmdk
No errors were found on the virtual disk, '/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/vm/test.vmdk'.

Any help would be apprecaited.  Is there a way to increase the verbosity of the logging?

Here is my ovftool version info: VMware ovftool 2.0.1 (build-260188)

Thanks!

OVA vs OVF in ovftool

Hi all,

I am trying to implement an OVF support for some virtualization software, which is using raw images for disks. I use qemu-img to convert raw images to vmdk format. Then I use ovftool to convert ovf file into vmware instance.

When the file I have is a simple ovf descriptor + manifest + disk - all is fine, it works even if I'm using qemu-img without "compat6" option

When the disk is compressed or the OVF package is packed into OVA - there are errors being thrown. Moreover when I create OVA package with no disk, the conversion works.

Here is the fragment of results for the OVA file:

Can someone please explain to me, what is happening?
I am using python's tarfile to create OVA, if this may be of importance (although I doubt that, since it works with diskless OVA),
my qemu-img version used in this example was 0.12,
I used ovftool in version 2.0.0.

Thank you.
