Importing ovf to workstation 8 not working

$

Each search for my question leads me here; I found a similar issue, but have been getting consistent failures.

I have a server VM that is in ESXi 4.1.0 502767 that I have exported to OVF Template using vSphere 5.0, then either directly in VMware Workstation 8.0.1 528992 or using ovftool 2.1.0 (build-467744) I get failures. The first failure was "target does not support CPU validation".

Following a thread I found in this list, I attempted to comment out the CpuCompatibilitySection and deleting the .mf file. This resulted in a parse error.

My next attempt was to simply delete the CpuCompatibilitySection from the .ovf file, which it appeared to do something, created a .vmx file and reported successful completion, but when trying to open the .vmx file, I get an internal error.

I also tried to do an open of the ovf file with Workstation and it appears to complete, but fails on open with again an internal error.

I've restarted Workstation and tried to open the ovf file, which appeared to complete. Including the ovftool.log and what appears to be the session log.

I'm running VMware Workstation on an HP xw6600 workstation with 8G under Windows 7 Enterprise x64.

The goal is to export a copy of a production VM server to workstation to test a software upgrade locally as I have in the past.

If there is a better way to get a copy to my workstation, please direct me to the appropriate how-to references.

Thanks!

how to deploy ova/ovf into VMware Player?

hello.

         I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

         Anybody has any idea? Thanks.

Error: Invalid access to memory location - Fix an OVA?

I have a VM that I exported as an OVA as a "Just in Case" backup a while ago. Today I had to use it and I cannot import it.

There was an ISO mounted when I did the export and it exported the ISO as well. The error I get is when it tries to access the ISO, it fails.

I downloaded OVFtool in the hopes I could strip the ISO from the OVA, but I am getting an error trying to use the --noImageFiles option. it tells me:

E:\ESX\OVA's>ovftool --noImageFiles Win7-Tax64.ova test.ova
Opening OVA source: Win7-Tax64.ova
Opening OVA target: test.ova
Writing OVA package: test.ova
Disk Transfer Failed
Error: Invalid access to memory location.
Completed with errors

Is it possible to remove this ISO?

After searching through the forum I uninstalled OVFtool from my E: drive and put it on C: with the same result. Here is the logToConsole:

E:\ESX\OVA's>ovftool --X:logToConsole Win7-Tax64.ova test.ova

Specify IP Address for N/W card 4

Hi All,

I am trying to create an OVF using vSphere client with additional properties.

I want that during import of this OVF ( using vSphere client ) a dailog should come asking for IP configuration for eth3 only.

i.e. My VM has 4 network cards. Of which only eth3 is mapped to vSwitch0 of the ESX and is only visible to the external world.

I created new property types by following:

RightClick on VM -> Edit Settings -> options -> Advanced -> Properties

Related part of the exported ovf looks like:

{{{

</ProductSection>
    <ProductSection ovf:class="vami" ovf:instance="VAS_SMS">
      <Info>Information about the installed software</Info>

      <Property ovf:key="DNS" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true">
        DNS

The domain name servers for this VM (comma separated).

      </Property>
      <Property ovf:key="Gateway" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true" ovf:value="xx.xx.xx.xx">
        Gateway

Gateway address for this VM

      </Property>
      <Property ovf:key="ip3" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true">
        Network 3 IP Address

The IP address for this interface

      </Property>
      <Property ovf:key="netmask3" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true" ovf:value="xx.xx.xx.xx">
        Network 3 Netmask

The netmask  for this interface.

      </Property>
    </ProductSection>

}}}

But when I import this ovf using vpshere client, The wizard shows this network properties dialog , after I give the IP in there, The VM is not taking it. !!!

Any ideas.??

I hope I am clear enough in explaining my issue.

Thanks

Hi,

I have an OVF file that refeneces a disk image from a webserver, e.g.:

<File ovf:href="http://myserver/cdrom.iso" ovf:id="file1"/>

When i try to deploy this OVF to a vSphere server, it fails at the disk transfer stage... it looks to me like ovftool is treating it like a local file:

$ ovftool my.ovf vi://root:@172.26.0.172

Here is the output with logging enabled:

When an OVF is deployed from a local file, does it mean the references also need to be local? I had a quick read of the OVF spec and it seems like file reference can be anywhere... local, relative, http or https... any ideas?

Thanks,
John

How does one include a vmx file entry into an ovf file template?

$

In order to run our VM on Workstation 9 and ESX 5.1 it is necessary to enter the following in our .vmx file:

timeTracker.lazyApic = "FALSE"

This is necessary to keep the timer ticks from being consolidated and not delivered in a timely fashion.

How do I convert this into an entry in our .ovf file template?

Thanks.

No local configuration options in .ovftool

Hello:

I am working in a Windows environment with ovftool 3.01.

When running the ovftool in a directory that contains an ovf and a .ovftool file, the ovftool does not seem to pick up the local configuration file.

> ovftool --help config

This will show as "Currently no local configuration options in .ovftool"

I have tried a number of permutations: ".ovftool", "
.ovftool", even "ovftool.cfg" on the off chance it is looking for the global name.

But none of these options work.

When I move the file to C:\Documents and Settings\$USERNAME\VMware\ovftool.cfg, which makes it global, it works just fine. So, I know the file is working.

But I am managing dozens of unique OVAs, and so having the local configuration option would be most helpful.

Am I misnaming the local config? Or is this a known bug or linux-only feature?

Thanks,

Andrew

setting ovf properties with ovftool and vcloud

$

I'm trying to import an OVA file with settable OVF properties for configuration (product key, network configuration) into vCloud with ovftool. It seems from the documentation that I should be using the --prop option to set these values, but they don't seem to get passed through vCloud to the deployed vApp, and the system gives an error about unconfigured properties when it tries to start up. I can go in the vCloud interface and manually enter them for my vApp, but I was hoping to automate the process with ovftool.

At first I thought the issue was that the properties where at the VM level instead of the vApp level, but changing the OVA in vSphere to move the properties to the vApp itself produces the same result. Using the same command to import the OVA directly into vSphere correctly sets the properties with either version.

Is setting of OVF properties for vCloud supported by ovftool? If so, what is the correct syntax?

Currently running:

ovftool -o --acceptAllEulas --prop:productkey="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX" --prop:ipaddress="10.146.3.1" --prop:netmask="255.255.0.0" --prop:gateway="10.146.1.254" vApp.ova vcloud://vclouddirector?org=IT&vdc=IT&catalog=IT&vapp=test1

Thanks.

sign an ovf

Hi,

I wrote some Ruby code that creates the the .cert file of my ovf. I used ovftool to create the .cert file. The two files differ slightly. The one created by my Ruby code is rejected when I try to deploy my ovf in vsphere client. The one created by ovftool works fine.

Here are the signatures in the two .cert files:

SHA1(custom-signed.mf)= 2fbcd216cc3916bceff51ed178779beaf1191e61c7a1f2375717bf9da489f9ff3a3c2710e0d159d9e14b12bc5121e12b75e275cc8323025d54b1ca313dfc7708bacf29927a3ebd31bb9bd3c162572c1657099d48b885eacb5e30e791ddba164bc8527b7c0b917cb1fa7aef6b2e2acfa2c2e06646b65fab77303049

SHA1(custom-signed.mf)= 2fbcd216cc3916bceff51ed178779beaf1191e61c7a1f2375717bf9da489f9ff3a3c2710e0d159d9e14b12bc51210e12b705e275cc08323025d54b1ca313dfc7708bacf299270a030ebd31bb9bd3c162572c01657099d48b885eacb5e300e7091ddba164bc8527b7c0b917cb01fa7aef6b2e2acfa2c2e06646b65fab77303049

The first signature was created by the Ruby code. The second was created by ovftool. The difference between the two is that the ovftool generated signature has some extra zeros in it.

Here's what the Ruby code looks like:

# read in the private key

pem = File.read('F:/temp/myvcops2/va/myvcops.pem')

private_key = OpenSSL::PKey::RSA.new(pem)

# read in the .mf manifest that we are about to sign

filename = 'F:/temp/myvcops2/va/output/custom-signed.mf'

data = File.read(filename)

# sign the .mf file using the private key

sig = private_key.sign(OpenSSL::Digest::SHA1.new, data)

hex_sig = sig.to_s.each_byte.map { |b| b.to_s(16) }.join

puts "SHA1(#{File.basename(filename)})= #{hex_sig}\n"

Please help!

Thanks,

Gary

I have a setup where I am accessing vCenter and an ESXi host through a NAT layer. If I try to deploy directly to vCenter, ovftool automatically tries to connect to the ip address of the ESXi host behind the NAT layer, which fails.

It looks something like this:

[root@ovfimporter mnt]# date; ovftool --datastore="PayGo Storage" --net:"VLan 4=DedicatedPortGroup_NNNN" CUST/CUST.ovf vi://matthew.wallace@10.10.10.1/Customer\ Datacenter/host/PayGo\ Cluster/Resources/Paygo/NNNN\ \(abc44060-35dc-438a-8c79-6bc7586082ab\)/ ;date

Looking at netstat, I saw a hung connection to 443 of one of the ESX hosts in that PayGo Cluster:

tcp    1 192.168.0.105:46167     172.17.0.10:443

SYN_SENT

In this case, 172.17.0.10 is the "real" IP of one of the esx hosts in the PayGo cluster managed by that vCenter, which I can reach from the client running the ovftool only by using the NAT ip of 10.10.10.100.

So, I tried to specify the external ip of that host. Per the ovftool 3.5 user guide:

To convert an OVF package to a vCenter Server, use the following syntax:

> ovftool /ovfs/my_vapp.ovf vi://username:pass@my_vc_server/?ip=10.20.30.40

(Uses a managed ESXi host’s ip address.)

Given that, I tried using several syntaxes:

ovftool --datastore="PayGo Storage" --net:"VLan 4=DedicatedPortGroup_NNNN" CUST/CUST.ovf vi://matthew.wallace@10.10.10.1/Customer\ Datacenter/host/PayGo\ Cluster/Resources/Paygo/NNNN\ \(abc44060-35dc-438a-8c79-6bc7586082ab\)/?ip=10.10.10.100

or even just the simplest version to see if I can get a prompt for going further down in the locator tree:

ovftool --datastore="PayGo Storage" --net:"VLan 4=DedicatedPortGroup_NNNN" "vi://matthew.wallace@10.10.10.1/?ip=10.10.10.100"

I invariably get a result like this:

The manifest validates

Enter login information for target vi://10.10.10.1/

Username: matthew.wallace

Password: *********

Error: Locator does not refer to an object: vi://matthew.wallace@10.10.10.1:443/?ip=10.10.10.100

Completed with errors

Outside of the brief mention of the "ip=xxx" param mentioned in the ovftool userguide I've been unable to find any reference to someone successfully using this parameter so I'm uncertain if this is a bug, my not understanding the intention of the parameter as specified in the OVF tool guide, or me using bad syntax.

ovftool - Managing Resource Pools

Hello,

I am using vSphere ESX (4 or 5).

I am writing automatic scripts using esxcfg and ovftool (on windows) commands.

I have some questions:

1. How can i create Resource Pool's? (if it cannot be done using ovftool, is there another way? maybe using esxcfg?)

2. What is the exact syntax of ovftool to deploy under that Resource Pool?

I am looking for something like this:

ovftool --noImageFiles -ds=dsName --net:"Network1"="Network2" --name=MyVM "C:/MyVM.ovf" "vi://user:password@192.168.1.1/Resource/myResource"

or anything else that can help.

Thanks!

OVF Tool - VmWare File Systems and OVA Format conversion question

Greetings! Question in regards to OVFtool and how storage file systems are handled in VMWare.

I am using the OVFTool version 2.1.0 (Tried 3.5.0 with not much avail) to export multiple VMDK files or disks in a Virtual Machine (versions 7 and 8) to a multiple OVA files for each - at moment tool allows for consolidation of disks in a partitioned state into ONE OVA - Does anyone know of a work around or undocumented switch which can be used to create X # of virtual disks to X # of OVAs for import into another system?

Copying VMDKs is not a viable option in this case as want to remain with OVA standards.

Thank you!

question regarding adding extra config parameters to ovf

Hi,

I have ovftool version (4.0.0).I am trying to create an ovf of a VM with extra config parameters. How do i specify the exportFlags command line option to allows the config parameters to translate from the VM to the ovf ? The documentation says I need to specify a extraconfig vSphere source .

This works fine : ovftool --allowAllExtraConfig --extraConfig:ethernet1.coalescingScheme=disabled --extraConfig:ethernet0.coalescingScheme=disabled

but this doesn't : ovftool --exportFlags=extraconfig

I don't want to add the key:value in the command line , rather pick up these from the VM I am using to create the ovf.

Is there something that I am missing out ?

Thanks in advance

Hi, does anyone know if there is a way to set the admin password for a virtual machine being deployed using the --prop options in the tool.

Thanks, Paul

HI, I am using ovf tool.exe to upgrade of SSO from 5.5 to 6.0 on linux guest machine using windows as ovftool host as but not able to get the proper command .

My current command looks like below -

ovftool X:logFile=C:\log.txt "X:logLevel=verbose"  --acceptAllEulas -ds=upgrade-3  --powerOn --X:waitForIp  C:\folder\VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.0._OVF10.ova   vi://root:vmware11@10.110.xx.xxx/

Please let me know if anyone has tried this earlier or any way to pass the config file as json or similar.

Any pointers will be much appriciated. Thanks in advance.
