how to migrate a virtual machine on a single server esxi host to ovf

$

HI How do you use the ovftool to migrate a virtual machine (VMX) on a single server esxi 5.1 host to an ovf file? the syntax requires you to specify a data center . However I do not have a datacenter, because I only have a single esx host.

example: ovftool vi://username:pass@my_host/my_datacenter/vm/ my_vm_folder /ovfs/my_vm.ovf

What do I put for datacenter if I do not have one.

thanks!

Custom OVF Property in my Virtual appliance

$

I'm trying to create an additional property in my VM that I build with VMware Studio so that I can use OVFTool to pass a value for the property when I deploy the VM to a vCenter.

The property looks like that shown in red. But when I invoke OVFTool to give a value to this property, what am I supposed to be using?

Something like this I can't get to work:

    ovftool  <...>  --prop.ConfigurationManagementServer.My_VM_Name= 10.1.2.3   <..>

Thanks for any hints,

CJ

OVF used for backup and restore?

$

Hello,

I am brand new to the OVF Tool and am currently reading the documentation and experimenting with the utility.

I would like to know if the OVF Tool is a good utility for performing VM backups (copies) in a vSphere environment.

It is not clear, if that is one of the intended uses of the OVF Tool.

How would one accomplish this (backup and restore later) with the OVF Tool command line utility?

1) Convert vmx config file to ovf (what happens to the original vmx file and the vmdk, vmxf, nvram, etc... files?)

Once you have an ovf package, what is the best way to import it (restore the VM)? If you use the "Deploy OVF Template" feature in vSphere client, does it launch a wizard that prompts you for all the required meta configuration? Do you need to remember certain config settings from when you created the OVF package?

Thanks for any insight as I come up to speed with the OVF Tool.

Thanks,

Bryan

OVF format expectations

$

Is there a document anywhere that outlines the format that the OVFTool expects the OVF file to be in?

Such as: elements that ovfTool expects?

I have some OVF sources that are .9 and 1.0 compliant however, ovfTool does not 'like' them because the OVF is not written the exact same way as an ovfTool produced OVF of the same VM. The VMware vmx setting, the resources subtypes are not there for example. As these are VMware specific and optional.

Any guidance is greatly helpful.

Thanks!

i installed the OVF tool yesterday, i followed every step in the "OVF Tool User Guide" and when i open the comman prompt and typed "ovftool" its work but when i retype again i get an error saying "no source of target "specified". Also, i dont really understand how to use it, what exactly does typing "ovftool <source locator> <destination locator>" do? what exactly do u type in the brackets? And can some please post an easy guide on how to make an OVF file. THANK YOU

ovf tool fails on device paths

$

"A line such as ide1:0.fileName = "/dev/cdrom" or a line such as ide1:0.fileName = "/dev/scd0" wil cause the ovftool to abort with the following message:

- Device 'cdrom1' has a backing type that is not supported. This is a general limitation of the virtual machine's virtual hardware version of the selected host.

By contrast if the vmx file cdrom setting is set to ide0:1.autodetect = "TRUE" this error is not received.

We are not sure if this can be overcome with other tool options, although we have not seen anything that looks promising.

Additionally, many of our settings are not carried over to the ovf format, they are simply dropped, such as the isolation.* settings.

Also, the original VM consisted of several disk files (vmdk). The ovftool created one vmdk file from this VM. We will require creating vmware persistent and vmware non-persistent disks for some of our VMs.

We are concerned that the ovftool may lose such disk information. This would be a show stopper for us, and would require us find an alternative solution for transporting VMs.

We would like for VMware to advise us of possible workarounds and any recommendations for these issues."

OVF imports but gives disk error on power-on

Fellows,

We just imported an .ova file using the vSphere Client GUI

successfully. But when we try to power on the VM, the VM console only shows

"A disk error" and nothing else. This is a time-sensitive production

pilot and does not look good!

Anyone experienced this before? Couldn't find anything on

the topic.

The .ova was created using the same version of vCenter at

another site.

OVF 0.9 with Debian

Hi,

is it possible to create OVF 0.9 containing Debian? What is the correct ovf:id code?

I am trying to create OVF that imports into vSphere 4 as Debian (which does support Debian) and is still possible to import through VC 2.5 GUI.

Thanks,

Petr.

VMware's ovftool doesn't install/work on VMware vMA 4.0?

$

Tried to install 64bit ovftool on VMware vMA 4.0 today and it failed to install or yield any useful information:

[vi-admin@scofield]$ ./VMware-ovftool-installer-1.0.0-166674-lin.x86_64.sh

VMware OVF Tool installer script
Copyright VMware 2009
.........extracting archive........

Checksum validation failed for archive.
(If you use FTP, make sure to set it to binary mode)

As far as I can tell, the binary is actually included in the install script though I'm not sure why 'FTP' is being referenced here unless VMware is expecting to download the actual source? I would hope that since vMA is a VMware virtual appliance that it should support any "VMwae" utilities but from what I've seen in the past with VDDK and VIX, that is not always and generally is not the case.

Can anyone comment on or know how to get it to install?

Thanks for your time

how do I encrypt and sign VM under ESXi 4.0 ?

$

0

OVF format apparentely allows ISV to encrypt and sign VM but I can't seem to figure out how to do this in vsphere/ESXi 4.0. my goals are two-fold

#1: prevent tampering with the OVF xml,

the ISV has the option to digitally sign the OVF file. On import, the

user can verify the signature, if the verification fails, this indicates

a change to the file from what the ISV produced. ISVs also need to

attach end user license agreement (EULA) information. During import,

EULA text is presented to the user to accept or reject. The ISV has the

ability to incorporate whatever text necessary to fulfill the EULA

display requirement.

#2: Another example is if an IT administrator must move a VM from one

physical location to another and requires an export of the VM to do so.

The contents (virtual disks) of the VM are sensitive and the

administrator must secure them. The administrator can choose to create

an OVF and encrypt the contents. As part of the process, she would like

the appliance in a single file format (OVA).

what tools free or otherwise do I use to achieve the above goals.

our VM is 'other 2.6 linux kernel' based and run in text console mode. No X-windows/GUI etc.,

Can't import OVA in to a folder

I an trying to inport an OVA file in to a precreated folder named test under a datacenter. I have created a fold under vCenterServer/datacenter/host/test and running the below command.

ovftool --powerOn C:\Images\cur\NAMEHERE.ova vi://Administrator:PASSWORD@192.168.1.100/vCenterServer/datacenter/host/test

When i run this command i get the below output

Opening OVA source: C:\Images\cur\NAMEHERE.ova

Error: Found wrong kind of object (Folder)

I have also tried the same but importing in to a VM folder vCenterServer/datacenter/VM/tes, this gives the same error as above.

What am i doing wrong?

ovftool fails with i/o error converting esx4 ovf

I have a problem with converting ovf or importing it to esx server.

ovftool starts, detects ovf and after progress of 99%, I am getting:

Disk Transfer Failed
Error: IO error
.ovf, ovftool logfile and vmdk header are included.
I am using latest ovftool downloaded today on osx platform.
Thanks in advanced,

Anybody got the latest Oracle (Sun) Open Storage simulator imported to ESX4?

$

I've been trying to import the ovf-based Oracle storage simulator to ESX4. Also tried importing to Workstation when that failed.

No luck. Not with integrated converter, not with standalone converter, not with ovftool. Changing/removing lines in .ovf file brings me a bit further but still no cigar.

The process stalls at different points, but typically I get an error about unknown OS or unsupported hardware, sometimes a parse error with no additional info.

Has anybody got this working?

The simulator is a virtual-box based Solaris appliance.

Create OVF with flat vmdk

$

Hey,

I'm trying to build a utility that builds an OVF, given a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk with the descriptor. But I've found that only streamOptimized disks will export properly, however they only take embedded descriptors. I'm using VSphere 4 to deploy an ovf.

In the ovf, I have the disk format to be ovf:format="http://www.vmware.com/interfaces/specifications/vmdk.html#streamOptimized". This works perfectly fine until VSphere gets to reading the vmdk file where it gives the error message "Error uploading file C:\path\to\scsi0_0.vmdk to server. I/O exception while reading VMDK header", where the header is,

# Disk DescriptorFile
version=1
CID=fffffffe
parentCID=ffffffff
createType=streamOptimized
# Extend description
RW 16777216 FLAT "scsi0_0-flat.vmdk"
# The Disk Data Base
#DDB
ddb.virtualHWVersion = "7"
ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic"
ddb.geometry.heads = "64"
ddb.geometry.sectors = "32"
ddb.geometry.cylinders = "8192"

I guess my question is, does deploying ovfs support any other format other than streamOptimized where I can use a flat.vmdk and a .vmdk?

Thank you,

Kyle
