ovftool slow speed and Win7 virtual machine

Hi,

I am using the ovftool v2.0.1 64bit to automatically create the OVA files from the virtual machines created by the workstation 7.1 and have two big problems:

  • The ovftool don't know the gestos = "windows7-64" in the vmx file.
    • It encode it to <OperatingSystemSection ovf:id="1" vmw:osType="*winVista64Guest">.
    • Using the ovftool to create the virtual machine from this ova package create vmx file with guestos = "other" (32bit OS). The virtual machine doesn't work before the OS type is not changed to the 64bit win7
    • Using the guestos = "winvista-64" in vmx file is the workaround but I want to see support for win7 x64bit OS, please.
  • Using the ovftool with mapped network discs on Win7 is nightmare when encoding or decoding the OVA file with compress option. The speed is about 1MB/s when the target is on mapped network disk. Tested in more environment with same results.
The virtual drive size before compression (vmdk file) is about 12GB and the size after compression is about 5-6GB (ova package).
The OS installed in virtual drive is Win7 64b.
I am using parameter "--compression=9" when creating the ova package.

Do you have any solution for these problems. especially for the second one, please?

Problem extracting OVA using latest OVFTool

I have a .ova created supplied to me that I'd like to open on several local copies of VMWare Workstation.

On one machine I am able to open it successfully.

On another using VMWare Workstation I get warnings that the .ova "did not pass OVF specification conformance or virtual hardware compliance checks" and then if I attempt to retry, I get an "Invalid access to memory location."

This is using VMWare Workstation 8.0.0 build-471780 on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit 6.1.7601, SP 1 machine.

Attempting it with the latest build of OVFtool (2.1.0 build-461994) also fails.

Here's the output of ovftool.exe to the console - suggestions/ideas welcome!

Mac OSX newbie - where is ovftool after installing the package

which ovftool

does not find a match after I have installed the latest version of the tool. The User Guide does not specify where it is installed on OSX. How do I validate that it was installed correctly? I'm using OSX 10.7.x

jbayer$ ovftool
-bash: ovftool: command not found
I looked in /Library/Application Support
but I only see a Fusion directory, not one for the tool.
Thanks, James

how to deploy ova/ovf into VMware Player?

hello.

I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

         Anybody has any idea? Thanks.

Best Regards,

OVF ValueMap & Values

I have an OVF with an ovf:qualifiers ValueMap drop down list of strings.

I would like to map the selected string into some other values either int or string will do.

I saw in the DSP0004 Version 2.5.0 "Common Information Model (CIM) Infrastructure" document; an example in Section 5.5.2.51 ~pg 47

This example appears to do what I want, map the ValueMap list to the Values list.

BUT I can not make it work.

Here is the example text:

[Values {"zero&one", "2to40", "fifty", "the unclaimed", "128-255"}, ValueMap {"..1","2..40" "50", "..", "x80.." }]

The document implies that picking a value in the ValueMap will set the property to the coresponding value in the Values list

I get syntax errors when I use vSphere to deploy the OVF

ovf:qualifiers=[Values{...}, ValueMap{...}]

error expect ' or "

ovf:qualifiers='[Values{...}, ValueMap{...}]'

ovf:qualifiers='Values{...}, ValueMap{...}'

more syntax errors

ovf:qualifiers='ValueMap{...}, Values{...}'

The above does not have errors, but it ignores my ovf:userConfigurable="true" so there is no selection and the value is not mapped.

Without the Values{} list, the drop down list is user selectable and the property is a string from the ValueMap list.

Using ovftool to deploy an OVF with references to external files does not seem to work...

Hi,

I have an OVF file that refeneces a disk image from a webserver, e.g.:

<File ovf:href="http://myserver/cdrom.iso" ovf:id="file1"/>

When i try to deploy this OVF to a vSphere server, it fails at the disk transfer stage... it looks to me like ovftool is treating it like a local file:

$ ovftool my.ovf vi://root:@172.26.0.172

Opening OVF source: my.ovf

Warning: No manifest file

Opening VI target: vi://root@172.26.0.172:443/

Deploying to VI: vi://root@172.26.0.172:443/

Disk Transfer Failed

Error: Failed to open file: cdrom.iso

Here is the output with logging enabled:

Deploying to VI: vi://root@172.26.0.172:443/

Disk Transfer Failed
Error: Failed to open file: myserver/cdrom.iso

When an OVF is deployed from a local file, does it mean the references also need to be local? I had a quick read of the OVF spec and it seems like file reference can be anywhere... local, relative, http or https... any ideas?

Thanks,
John

ovftool frequently encounters Unexpected end of stream

Hello

I've looked around in the forums, but couldn't find a resolution to this problem. I'm using ovftool (the latest version - 2.1.0) to deploy an ova consisting of 3 VMs to an ESXi 4.1 server, via a vcenter. I see frequent stalls in the data transfer from the vcenter to the server (did a packet capture), and ovftool frequently (but not always) gives up at some random point through the transfer, complaining that it encountered an unexpected end of stream.

Here's the commandline I'm using:

ovftool --name=foo --X:logToConsole=True --X:logLevel="verbose" --diskMode=thin --net:"VM Network"="VM Network" --vmFolder=bar --skipManifestCheck myova.ova vi://user:pass@localhost/my_dc/host/my_host/Resources/my_pool

Here's a log snippet if it might help:

Interestingly, if I use the vsphere client to deploy the ova, it goes through quicker and I haven't seen it fail (I need to use ovftool to automate deployment).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ovftool: Conversion to monolithic sparse image fails with a Vapp ovf file

Hi,

We have been trying to create the monolithicSparse Image for the Vapp Ovf using the following OVF Tool command-Line Options

/usr/bin/ovftool --acceptAllEulas -dm=monolithicSparse Test_Vapp.ovf NEW_Vapp.vmdk

But the Ovf tool fails to do the conversion with the following message

Error: OVF Package is not supported by target.

We have also tried validating the Vapp ovf file using the ovftool schemaValidate and did not find any issues with this.

Please let us know if the Ovf tool supports conversion for multiple virtual machines (i.e support for Vapp OVF)

Thanks in advance

ovftool - Managing Resource Pools

Hello,

I am using vSphere ESX (4 or 5).

I am writing automatic scripts using esxcfg and ovftool (on windows) commands.

I have some questions:

1. How can i create Resource Pool's? (if it cannot be done using ovftool, is there another way? maybe using esxcfg?)

2. What is the exact syntax of ovftool to deploy under that Resource Pool?

I am looking for something like this:

ovftool --noImageFiles -ds=dsName --net:"Network1"="Network2" --name=MyVM "C:/MyVM.ovf" "vi://user:password@192.168.1.1/Resource/myResource"

or anything else that can help.

Thanks!

OVF Tool - VmWare File Systems and OVA Format conversion question

Greetings! Question in regards to OVFtool and how storage file systems are handled in VMWare.

I am using the OVFTool version 2.1.0 (Tried 3.5.0 with not much avail) to export multiple VMDK files or disks in a Virtual Machine (versions 7 and 8) to a multiple OVA files for each - at moment tool allows for consolidation of disks in a partitioned state into ONE OVA - Does anyone know of a work around or undocumented switch which can be used to create X # of virtual disks to X # of OVAs for import into another system?

Copying VMDKs is not a viable option in this case as want to remain with OVA standards.

Thank you!

OVF Tool HELP!!!!!!

i installed the OVF tool yesterday, i followed every step in the "OVF Tool User Guide" and when i open the comman prompt and typed "ovftool" its work but when i retype again i get an error saying "no source of target "specified". Also, i dont really understand how to use it, what exactly does typing "ovftool <source locator> <destination locator>" do? what exactly do u type in the brackets? And can some please post an easy guide on how to make an OVF file. THANK YOU
