run ovftool error , anyone helps?

i am using ovftool (verisn 2.01), and i have got some error  as below, anyone ever met these? SOS

How to start machine after OVF export?

I'm running OVF tool to export a running virtual machine (ESXi 5.0) from a command line. One of the options is shutting down the virtual machine before the export that works fine. Is there an option to start this machine automatically after the export?

Deploy OVA "Transfer Failed"

I have an OVA that have built and deployed via VIC many times successfully.  I am now trying to automate the deployment via the OVFTOOL.  However, I keep seeing this "transfer failed" message.  Is there some way to enable a more verbose output?

 

Here is my current command/output:

I'm trying to deploy one ovf file to my ESX 4.0

 

 

ovftool -v

following is my command line.

the result is:

I can see base1 directory generated on ESX projectbld on storage1 , and some zero size are created , too

and I can also see  "Deploy OVF template" on my vSphere Client.

 

but the progress on vSphere Client will be the task was canceled by a user.

and ovftool fail.

 

 

 

 

 

who can tell me what's going wrong? or where is the log to investgate on both ESX and ovftool host?

 

 

When will OVF support disk reference paths and not embed disk data into mgiration file?

When moving VMs from RHEV, KVM, Hyper-V, and VMware, which many are doing today, OVF makes sense as a starting point, however, OVF is very ineffecient if the given VMs already have virtual disks in the correct location.  For example, moving VMs from VMware to KVM, and from KVM to VMware, since KVM supports VMDK as does VMware, and both could and can access the same datastore/NFS mount point, the encode/decode of the virtual machine disks in OVF is not needed, just use a reference path to the VM disks, not the actual data.  So the question is, When will OVF support disk reference paths and not embed disk data into mgiration file?  Interesting feature no?

Having problems installing  VMware-ovftool-2.0.1-260188-lin.i386.sh on a linux host.

 

 

When I try to install I get

OVFTool cannot set property successfully

I want to set some properties to ovf files.

 

I use ovftool as bellow:

 

ovftool --prop:ip=10.32.23.123 --prop:dns=255.255.254.0

 

when this command has been executed without error showing, I still cannot see the property of ovf files.

 

Then I used ovftool myovffile.ovf

 

I still can not see the property I want to set.

what should I do?

Greetings friends,

 

I have installed ovftool on a Linux machine with SLES 11 SP1 x86_64

 

I am currently experimenting on how to use ovftool, as i'm a total newbie considering it's use.

 

I currently have a vCenter Server 4.1, with IP 10.20.30.40. There i have the following structure:

 

10.20.30.40

     MyDataCenter

          Cluster1

          Cluster2

               MyVM

 

The datastore where the vmx is located is named NAS1

 

I want to convert this virtual machine to .ovf. But for starters, i would like to probe it. I'm using ovftool 2.1.0 and the user's guide says that the VMX type is supported. I thought to use vSphere Locator with Datastore (ds) query type. So, i execute the following:

 

ovftool vi://10.20.30.40/MyDataCenter?ds=[NAS1] MyVM/MyVM.vmx

 

After i'm asked for credentials, i get the following:

 

Please enter login information for source vi://10.20.30.40/
Username: xxxxxxx

Error: Curl error: Couldn't resolve host name

Have you seen that before? Am i doing something wrong with the syntax? Or in general, am i using ovftool the wrong way?

how to I import an ovf into esxi 3.5

I've got a number of VM''s running that I've created or converted from physical machines but a software supplier gave me a zip file that contains;

 

a .ovf, .mf and and .vmdk file

 

I'm running the free version of esxi3.5 - how do I do about imprting/migrating, etc... these files into my esxi 3.5 server?

OVF environment not available

Hi, I'm having a problem with ovftool. I'm running ovftool against a ESXi host with a trial license. The command shows the ovf properties that I've set on the commandline, but once I'm on the virtual machine, the ovf environment is not present at all. If I do the deployment through the vSphere client, it works perfectly, same OVA file.

 

I see the output from ovftool:

 

--> /prop/ip0 = "192.168.43.159"

--> /prop/ip1 = "192.168.43.185"

 

but also get the warnings:

 

Warning:
- OVF property with key: 'ip0' does not exists.
- OVF property with key: 'ip1' does not exists.

Serious problem in ovftool VMDK input

All,

 

First of all, apologies if this is an inappropriate forum. I do not have a support contact for this issue. We are VMware customers, however our licenses are purchased through an academic reseller. Our concern is that this bug has crept into recent releases and perhaps gone unnoticed in QA. It's serious enough for us to consider moving to other hypervisor products.

 

I believe there may be a serious bug in OVFtool's disk read code. We observe that VMs are created OK after upload or import, but disk contents are zero-filled. No error conditions are reported at any time. It is only clear that the bug has been exercised, when an uploaded or imported VM fails to boot.

 

We have several research VMs with multiple LANs, which run FreeBSD 8.2 in VMware Fusion 5.0.2, MacOS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. I was also able to reproduce the bug with a fresh installation of vSphere ESXi 5.1 and ovftool 3.0.1. V

 

Using the separately packaged ovftool, I can export the VMs inside Fusion, by giving fully qualified paths to their VMX files. The bug appears to be in VMDK read. I exercised it in two use cases, Fusion OVA import and ESXi OVA upload, as follows:

 

  1. If I import an affected OVA into Fusion from the GUI, Fusion will invoke its own copy of ovftool 3.0.1 to perform the import. VMs are created with a sane VMX file. VMDKs are created. However their contents are zero-filled, and the VMDK contents in the OVA have been ignored.
  2. If I upload an affected OVA to ESXi, using ovftool and a vi:// target URL on the command line, the same bug is observed with ESXi. Again, the VMX is sane - we inspected this by SSHing into ESXi and manually reviewing the VMX on the VMFS data store with vi. The VMDK contents are zeroed on the VMFS datastore, and the VMDK contents in the OVA have been ignored.

 

ovftool seems, in some cases, to ignore the contents of the packaged VMDK files in OVAs, and those associated with VMX files from VMware products.

 

To date I have only been able to reproduce the issue with FreeBSD guests. The bug does not appear in all exported OVAs, however affected VM and OVA combinations will consistently demonstrate it.

 

  • We first noticed this problem in October 2012, and have not been in a position to exercise it thoroughly until now.

 

  • I can make an OVA available which demonstrates the issue. Please contact me privately to arrange. The files are typically 2GB in size.

 

 

Other observations:

 

 

  • There is no problem with OVA generation. I have inspected the OVAs manually using tar, extracted the embedded VMDKs inside, converted them back to 2GB sparse format using vmware-vdiskmanager (or vmkfstools under ESXi), and loaded them into ESXi and Fusion respectively.

 

  • Since ovftool was introduced, VMDKs must be uploaded manually using SFTP to avoid triggering the bug. The functionality in the vmware-vdiskmanager command which allows direct upload to ESXi servers has been removed.

 

  • Casual inspection with DTrace under OS X reveals that ovftool seems to be reading the full OVA file contents. We initially thought there may been a problem with VMDK upload, however other guests have not been affected.

 

  • The serialized format VMDK contents in the OVA are consistent with the original VMDKs. We verified this in one case with MD5 checksums. This requires denying all writes during the test.
  • We also reproduced this bug with out-of-box, unmodified FreeBSD installations, as our research VMs use ZFS in GPT partition containers.

 

  • We also noticed that Fusion's private copy of ovftool will break if ESXi specific options are specified in $HOME/.ovftool - although this is a separate issue from the main bug.
  • No source code is supplied for ovftool, so users are not able to fix this issue themselves.

 

Workarounds:

 

  • We load the OVA into Oracle VirtualBox, and re-export the OVA from there.
  • This is undesirable for many reasons, the main one being that it loses all the network binding information, which is critical to our work.

ovftool failing to convert vmx to ovf

Hello,

I'm attempting to do a vmware to ovf converstion.  However, I'm receiving some fairly generic errors from ovftool and was hoping I could get some help.

 

Here are the console messages when I attempt to convert:

But when I attempt to repair the disk, I get the following:

 

vmware-vdiskmanager -R /var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/vm/test.vmdk

Any help would be apprecaited.  Is there a way to increase the verbosity of the logging?

ovftool frequently encounters Unexpected end of stream

Hello

I've looked around in the forums, but couldn't find a resolution to this problem. I'm using ovftool (the latest version - 2.1.0) to deploy an ova consisting of 3 VMs to an ESXi 4.1 server, via a vcenter. I see frequent stalls in the data transfer from the vcenter to the server (did a packet capture), and ovftool frequently (but not always) gives up at some random point through the transfer, complaining that it encountered an unexpected end of stream.

 

Here's the commandline I'm using:

 

ovftool --name=foo --X:logToConsole=True --X:logLevel="verbose" --diskMode=thin --net:"VM Network"="VM Network" --vmFolder=bar --skipManifestCheck myova.ova vi://user:pass@localhost/my_dc/host/my_host/Resources/my_pool

Interestingly, if I use the vsphere client to deploy the ova, it goes through quicker and I haven't seen it fail (I need to use ovftool to automate deployment).

Properties lost when deployed a VM and exported it to OVF

Hi,

 

I have built a VM, using VMware Studio in OVA format. I defined some custom OVF environment properties in it.

After I built the VM, I opened the .OVF file to see the property values are appeared correctly. They look like the below

I deployed this OVF to a ESXi 4.0 server. Later exported the same VM to OVF format using OVFTool, using the command line

 

ovftool.exe vi://root:xxxxxxxxxxx@IP/vmname  "d:\Virtual Machines\imported-OVF\newVM.ovf"

 

After the export, I opened the newVM.OVF file and found that the properties (like product, vendor, version etc.) are not retained.

 

What could be the issue. Please suggest.

OVF Tool 3.0.1 Segmentation fault on linux

Running OVF Tool 3.0.1 on 32 bit CentOS 6 Linux 2.6.32-279.11.1.el6.i686 (download from VMWare site md5sum was checked ok)

 

Tool starts up fine and is in the process of exporting a VM from one ESXi 4.1 host to another ESXi 4.1 host . 

 

Tool then crashes with /usr/bin/ovftool: line 23:  7629 Segmentation fault      (core dumped) "$OVFTOOL_BIN" "$@"


Signed OVA package verification with ovftool failed

Greetings!

I'm currently trying to sign created OVA package with trusted certificate from Thawte.

This cert is valid (till 2013) and could be easily verified with openssl (`openssl verify sign.cert`) or with Windows tools.

Signing works as follows and it is okay:

ovftool --sourceType=vmx --targetType=ova --privateKey=sign.pem package.vmx package.ova

 

But when I try to check it with ovftool (`ovftool package.ova`) it shows:

Error: Verification of package.cert failed

 

Also verification of package.cert itself with openssl is also fine.

Can anybody help me on what could cause such problem?

ovftool add description when exporting ova

I want to edit the description filed when exporting an ova file. With export-vapp, it is pretty straightforward, just specify a parameter called “description”. like export-vapp -Description “abcd”. Is there a way to do the same thing using ovftool? Thanks.

OVFTOOL Deployment - syntax determination problem

I have a vApp which consists of an OVF file and three VMDK files, one for each VM.  All VMDK files are co-resident with the OVF file. 

 

 

NOTE:  This vApp deploys successfully from vSphere 4.0 client.

 

I am attempting to deploy the vApp using OVFTOOL.  However, I am unable to derive the proper OVFTOOL syntax. 

 

  • Potentially pertinent facts:  Datacenter is clustered; OVF to be deployed has multiple VMs, OVFTOOL version is 1.0.0

 

 

Using the command below, when the vApp already exists, produces a "specified parameter" error as shown.

 

  • ovftool --acceptAllEulas --datastore=(dsid) 
           --net:"HOST-A Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-B Network 1"=VMNET2 --net:"HOST-C Network 1"=VMNET2 
           appliance.ovf vi://(VSERVER)/(DATACENTER)/vm/(FOLDER)/(vAPP)

Using the same command as above, when the vApp does not already exist, produces a "does not refer to an object" error.

However, if I change the command to deploy to a target "folder", an error message appears, indicating a "wrong kind of object" error:

Assuming my first syntax is the correct one, the " - A specified parameter was not correct. (/p) folder" message throws me.  It seems inappropriate to the command.

 

I've tried several variations but no luck so far. I'm not seeing anything specific in the documentation as far as special handling in the cases of deployment of multiple-VM OVFs or deployment to clusters.  I tried looking at the commands with the debug parameters "--X:logToConsole --X:logLevel=trivial" , but saw nothing immediately helpful (to me anyway :P).

 

 

 

What should my expected target be for this... vApp or folder?  Should the vApp exist, or not?  Am I missing something else entirely?

I have a compressed OVF file generated by OVF tool using "compress" option. However, I cannot convert the generated ovf file back to vmx. When I run OVF tool to perform conversion, it says "Disk Transfer Failed" and "Error: Failed to open source disk: disk1.vmdk.gz" .Any ideas how I should proceed with this?

Defining serial port Without the GUI

I need access to my deployed virtual machine's serial console, not through a GUI window, but through ssh or telnet.  I finally found how to define a serial console so that I can telnet in, which is perfect, but now I'd like to automate the defining of that serial device without using the vSphere Client GUI.

 

I can define my serial port from the vSphere Client GUI after deploying my VM by powering off the VM, Edit Settings -> Add a Serial Port, check "Connect via Network" -> Network Backing -> Server (VM listens for connections), Port URI = telnet://10.36.0.85:7001, where 10.36.0.85 is my ESXi 4.1 server's IP address and 7001 is a random port.  When I power on my VM, I can telnet 10.36.0.85 7001 from a remote system and viola, I have serial console/terminal access.

 

In the vmx file, I can see

  serial0.present = "TRUE"

  serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE"

  serial0.fileType = "network"

  serial0.fileName = "telnet://10.36.0.85:7001"

 

The question is, how can I define the above either in the ovf file before I deploy, as I deploy (I'm using ovftool from a remote system), or via a remote command afterwards, e.g. a vSphere CLI command?  When I try exporting the ovf template from the vSphere client, I get "Device 'Serial port 1' cannot be exported."
