I have a .iso image from which I want to create a .ova , But everytime I run into a problem

Error: Curl error: Couldn't connect to server

Completed with errors

Here is the command I used,

ovftool vi://user:master/@14.23.12.34:443/rt4/www/html/imgs/qweTER7.3/.tyRani/NEWCFT/CFT-NEW-5.23.23.iso /rt4/www/html/tmp_ova/CFT-NEW-5.23.23.ova

Not sure whats wrong with this command, I don't have special character in my password or username

please note that 14.23.12.34 is a linux machine and both source and target are in same machine and Im executing ovftool command in same linux machine.

Thank you

OVFTool - Ubuntu 16.04 - cURL error: Couldn't connect to server

$

I am attempting to migrate a VM from one ESXi 6.5.0 host to another.

Using the following command (from Ubuntu 16.04):

sudo ovftool -ds="datastore1" "vi://USER:PASS@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/TestVM" "vi://USER:PASS@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX"

Passwords do not contain any special characters (new users with 'simple' passwords created just for this transfer).

When the command is run, it says "Opening VI Source vi://USER@host/TestVM"  "Error: cURL error: Couldn't connect to server"

Yet, in the ESXi Host Monitor on the Source, it shows "Find by Inventory Path" successful - and then - "Export VM" Failed (This task was cancelled by a user)

So, I can tell that it is connecting, querying properly, but fails to start the transfer.

Am I missing some dependency on Ubuntu?  Is my Syntax incorrect?

Does ovftool support a socks proxy?

Hello,

I am trying to use ovftool to export a VM to a Vcenter endpoint. I added --proxy socks://127.0.0.1:1080 and --X:viUseProxy but it does not seem to work:

ovftool --X:logLevel=verbose  --acceptAllEulas --name=ovftool-test --datastore=DEV_DT_Storage_Cluster --noSSLVerify=true --diskMode=thick --X:viUseProxy --proxy=socks://127.0.0.1:1080/ c

entos7-base-tmp/centos7-base.vmx vi://<vcenter-address>/TEST_DC/host/TEST_CLUSTER

Opening VMX source: centos7-base-tmp/centos7-base.vmx

Error: Internal error: Failed to connect to server

Completed with errors

Port 1080 in my Mac is listening, ssh tunnel is active and working. I can curl my vcenter over socks proxy.

I am using packer to generate a VMX to upload to vcenter. I have OVFtool in debug mode, but i cant figure out what the issue really is. I know that the URL for the webrequest is not correct, its been sanitized to post.

How to specify which datastore to use with OVFtool

$

This is driving me crazy! How do you specify which datastore to use when there are multiple?

I ran exactly the same command on a box that had one datastore and it worked fine (as expected). It created the VM folder in the root of the DS and then pulled across the VM from the OVF. However with multiple it just says no target datstore specified. I've tried a million combinations of ?-ds= with square brackets, without. Sometimes it says not found in inventory. I guess it's looking for a folder. But surely this can't be that hard?

ovftool fails with curl error: couldn't connect to server

HI,

I'm trying to create an OVF using ovftool 3.0.1. When I issue the ovftool command from the command line I get:

Error: cURL error: Couldn't connect to server
Completed with errors

I used the following command:

/usr/bin/ovftool vi://username:password@XX.XX.XX.XX/datacenter/vm/folder/vmname /destination

I can issue the command as above without the vmname to see if I can access Vsphere and to make sure I have a valid source locator.  The command is successful and returns a list of VMs I can use. When I add the VM name to the source locator path, I get the above error. The VM is pysically about 14GB in size (that is the space alloacted).

I can use the same command to another Vpshere server and I'm successful in creating the OVF. Which leads me to think that it might be a configuration issue with this Vsphere server?

What sorts of issues can lead to the above error?

Thanks,

Fernando

Error Installing OVFTool on Ubuntu 14 WorkStation Guest

I am trying to install ovftool 4.1.0 on a Ubuntu guest I have on my Windows host.  I downloadedd the ovftool bundle changed permission to +x, started the bundle, and accepted the license.  It says it is ready to install and I press enter.  Then I get the below and ovftool is never installed.

Rolling back VMware installer component 2.1.0

Removing files..

Uninstalling VMware installer component 2.1.0

Deconfiguring...

Any ideas? The bundle I have is the 'VMware-ovftool-4.1.0-2459827-lin.x86_64.bundle' on Ubuntu 14

ovftool import VM slow

$

Hi,

Am I the only one that gets about 10Mbps (Megabits/second), or about 1MB/sec (megabyte/sec) throughput when using the ovftool to import a VM on a 1Gbps LAN?  I would assume there is some type of throttle on the service console network interface, even though I haven't found any evidence from the forums that indicates this is true.  It's just a little strange that we're getting "exactly" 10Mbps.  This happens on multiple vCenter servers and ESX clusters so I'm assuming it's a throttle.  From the one machine I run the ovftool from, I can import to 2 different clusters and get 20Mbps (10Mbps on each).

This is on vCenter 4.0 Update 2 and ESX 4.0 Update 2 (not ESXi) as well as 4.1 versions of these.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Eric

Unsupported value '16' for element 'VirtualQuantity'

Hello,

I am unable to get a 16 cores vCPU created using ovftool.  I am manually creating the OVF file and have specified the following:

<rasd:VirtualQuantity>16</rasd:VirtualQuantity>

However, when I deploy using ovftool I get the following error.

Error:

 - Virtual machine has 16 virtual CPUs, but the host only supports 8. The number of virtual CPUs may be limited by the guest OS selected for the virtual machine or by the licensing for the host.

It works only with value of 8 and less for VirtualQuantity.

Note that I am able to create 16 CPU VMs from vSphere client using ISO files.  It's just using the OVA files that creating 16 CPU VMs is not working.

The host is licensed.

Any ideas what could be going wrong / what I can do to overcome this error?

looked around for this curl error and while it is fairly well known I haven't seen a solution applicable to my situation.

OVF format expectations

Is there a document anywhere that outlines the format that the OVFTool expects the OVF file to be in?

Such as: elements that ovfTool expects?

I have some OVF sources that are .9 and 1.0 compliant however, ovfTool does not 'like' them because the OVF is not written the exact same way as an ovfTool produced OVF of the same VM.  The VMware vmx setting, the resources subtypes are not there for example.  As these are VMware specific and optional.

Any guidance is greatly helpful.

Thanks!

Here is the command I used,

ovftool vi://user:master/@14.23.12.34:443/rt4/www/html/imgs/qweTER7.3/.tyRani/NEWCFT/CFT-NEW-5.23.23.iso /rt4/www/html/tmp_ova/CFT-NEW-5.23.23.ova

Not sure whats wrong with this command, I don't have special character in my password or username

please note that 14.23.12.34 is a linux machine and both source and target are in same machine and Im executing ovftool command in same linux machine.

Thank you

When I try to deploy an OVA file from an FTP location I get the following error:

ovftool.http.curl SSL connect error

Is there a way to specify a SFTP location? I tried to provide SFTP but it only accepts FTP/http/https

Any advise is appreciated.
