ovftool fails with curl error: couldn't connect to server

HI,

I'm trying to create an OVF using ovftool 3.0.1. When I issue the ovftool command from the command line I get:

Error: cURL error: Couldn't connect to server
Completed with errors

I used the following command:

/usr/bin/ovftool vi://username:password@XX.XX.XX.XX/datacenter/vm/folder/vmname /destination

I can issue the command as above without the vmname to see if I can access Vsphere and to make sure I have a valid source locator.  The command is successful and returns a list of VMs I can use. When I add the VM name to the source locator path, I get the above error. The VM is pysically about 14GB in size (that is the space alloacted).

I can use the same command to another Vpshere server and I'm successful in creating the OVF. Which leads me to think that it might be a configuration issue with this Vsphere server?

What sorts of issues can lead to the above error?

Thanks,

Fernando

I am trying to deploy OVAs using ovftool 3.0.1 to an ESXi 5.1 host. When deploying VCSA 5.1.0b it works as expected with the following command:

"/Applications/VMware OVF Tool/ovftool" --acceptAllEulas --skipManifestCheck --name=vsm -dm=thin -ds=datastore1 "--net:Network 1=VM Network" --powerOn ~/Downloads/VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5300-947940_OVF10.ova vi://root:password@esx01.local
If I try with vShield Manager I get the following error:
"/Applications/VMware OVF Tool/ovftool" --acceptAllEulas --skipManifestCheck --name=vsm -dm=thin -ds=datastore1 "--net:VSMgmt=VM Network" --powerOn ~/Downloads/VMware-vShield-Manager-5.1.2-943471.ova vi://root:password@esx01.local

I have confirmed that I can deploy the OVA manually. I have also confirmed the MD5SUM and tried the --disableVerification flag on ovftool. Any idea what I am missing?

i installed the OVF tool yesterday, i followed every step in the "OVF Tool User Guide" and when i open the comman prompt and typed "ovftool" its work  but when i retype again i get an error saying "no source of target "specified".  Also, i dont really understand how to use it, what exactly does typing "ovftool <source locator> <destination locator>" do?  what exactly do u type in the brackets?  And can some please post an easy guide on how to make an OVF file.  THANK YOU

giving Connect error when converting Win2K8 by vConverter

Was giving an SSL error, now giving a connecgt error. No firewall involved. I wonder Windows does not have ssh, so, why is vConverter using ssh.

Any help much appreciated.

ovftool command line on Win 7 unable to process backsplash in domain\user:password@vcenter

Hi VMWare experts,

I am having problem with automation script because the string passed in the ovftool command uses credential vsphere.local\userXYZ instead of just userXYZ

It appears that the backsplash in the 'vsphere.local\user' cause the command line to be misinterpreted, so the automation script that calls ovftool to deploy VMs kept failing.  It erred with "cURL error of ‘couldn’t resolve hostname" even though there is nothing wrong with any hosts or hostname resolution on the network.

On a Win-based vCenter I was able to reconfigure it so that instead of requiring login user format of 'vsphere.local\userXYZ', it will now accept user = 'userXYZ'.

With that change, ovftool.exe command string is now progress correctly and VMs are deployed.

I could reconfigure Window-based vCenter to not use just user = userXYZ (instead of vsphere.local\account), but I could not figure out how to get vCSA to stop requiring the format of vsphere.local\userXYZ.

The string segment in the long ovftool.exe command line looked like this …

This works:

"vi://userXYZ:password@tm-vcenter55/DC2-SJ/host/Topology/csg-sj-esxi112.cisco.com"

This does not work:

"vi://vsphere.local\userXYZ:password@lin-vcenter55/DC2-SJ/host/Topology/csg-sj-esxi111.cisco.com"

Is there anyway to configure vCenter Virtual Appliance to use log in format of user = userXYZ instead of user = vsphere.local\userXYZ?   Or is there some way of reformatting the string so that OS can interpret it correctly even with backsplash '\' is used in the string?

Thank you

Charles

Trying to convert VirtualBox OVF

I'm trying to convert an VirtualBox OVF that we had prepared to use in a ESX environment, but am recieving errors.  First off, I just want to make sure we are able to do this and secondly if anyone is able to help me resolve the errors.

Initiall I received the following errors.  This is trying to do a conversion directly on the ovf I was given.

iso to ovf/ova? Can it be done?

Hi I'm wondering if there is an automation tool/command(s) that will allow us (team of developers) to import/use a .iso file that contains 64bit OS and pass it through VMware ESXi or Server and then export it to OVF/OVA?

Is it possible? Can it be done?

Your answers will be very apreciated, many thanks!

Anybody got the latest Oracle (Sun) Open Storage simulator imported to ESX4?

I've been trying to import the ovf-based Oracle storage simulator to ESX4. Also tried importing to Workstation when that failed.

No luck. Not with integrated converter, not with standalone converter, not with ovftool. Changing/removing lines in .ovf file brings me a bit further but still no cigar.

The process stalls at different points, but typically I get an error about unknown OS or unsupported hardware, sometimes a parse error with no additional info.

Has anybody got this working?

The simulator is a virtual-box based Solaris appliance.

OVA to VMX using OVFTool in Mac OSx Terminal Problem

Hello,

I am new to OVFTool  and am having difficulty using it in Terminal on my MacBook Pro to convert an OVA (created by exporting my WinXp virtual machine from within VirtualBox), to a VMX file for use in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro.

I have installed the OVFTool on my boot drive (partition) which is named "LFP OS", in the folder:  /Library/VMWare/OVFTool/.

I have the OVA file on my data drive (partition) which is named "LFP Data" in the folder: /Virtual Machines/WinXP.ova.

I want to create a virtual machine file (VMX) in the same location as the soure that I can then import into VMWare Fusion.  I have gone through the OVFTool User Guide, forums, Google etc. and cannot get it to work properly.  It may be as simple as my Terminal syntax being off.  Anyway, please help.

Here is what I used in Terminal:

LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$ pwd
/volumes/lfp data/virtual machines
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$ ./Volumes/LFP\ OS/Library/VMWare/OVFTool/ovftool /Volumes/LFP\ Data/Virtual\ Machines/WinXP.ova /Volumes/LFP\ Data/Virtual\ Machines/WinXP.vmx
-bash: ./Volumes/LFP OS/Library/VMWare/OVFTool/ovftool: No such file or directory
LFP-MacBook-Pro:virtual machines nils$

Thanks for your time!

Converting a VM with snapshots

I think that ofvtool is a great tool to move VM between ESXi and ESX servers.

I need to convert a VM with several snapshots, and I would like to keep them: how can I tell ovftool to keep snapshots while coreting the .ovf or .ova files?

When importing it I want to see all my snapshots.

hello.

I create a ova file from my ESXi 5.0.0 with ovftool 2.1.0-467744, then I deploy this ova file into ESXi 5.0.0 is success and work well.

But I can't deploy the same ova file into VMWare Player with ovftool 2.1.0-467744 installed. Why?

         Anybody has any idea? Thanks.

Properties lost when deployed a VM and exported it to OVF

$

Hi,

I have built a VM, using VMware Studio in OVA format. I defined some custom OVF environment properties in it.

After I built the VM, I opened the .OVF file to see the property values are appeared correctly. They look like the below

<ProductSection ovf:required="false">
      <Info>VM ISV branding information</Info>
      <Product>xxxxxxxxx</Product>
      <Vendor> xxxxxxxxx , Inc.</Vendor>
      <Version>x.x.x.x</Version>
      <FullVersion>x.x.x.x alpha</FullVersion>

</ProductSection>

I deployed this OVF to a ESXi 4.0 server. Later exported the same VM to OVF format using OVFTool, using the command line

ovftool.exe vi://root:xxxxxxxxxxx@IP/vmname  "d:\Virtual Machines\imported-OVF\newVM.ovf"

After the export, I opened the newVM.OVF file and found that the properties (like product, vendor, version etc.) are not retained.

What could be the issue. Please suggest.

OVFtool bug when specifying datastore

$

It appears that ovftool 3.0.1 has an issue while specifying the target datastore when importing an OVF when the VI is a vCenter 5.0 server with ESX 5.0 Update 1 hosts that have a large number of Datastores.  The cluster where this problem occurs has 148 Datastores.

Some datastores work, most don't.  This is a new problem since ovftool 2.0.1 worked fine when this cluster was at ESX 4.0 Update 3.

An example statement that will cause the problem (with all names replaced with "test" names):

"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool\ovftool.exe" --acceptAllEulas --name="TestVM" --datastore="TestDatastore" --network=TestNetwork --vmFolder="TestFolder" http://192.168.0.1/public/ovfs/testvm.ovf vi://"username:password"@vcenter.test.com/"Data Center"/host/"HA and DRS"/Resources/"Test Resource Pool"

Which results in this error (with the datastore names replaced with TestDatastoreX), even though the Datastore clearly exists.  It worked fine prior to vSphere 5.0 and vCenter 5.0.  Any ideas?

Note that all "possible completions" specified below work fine!  Those that I have tried that are "not" in the possible completions do "not" work.

Getting Password string in ovf property

$

Hello,

I been working on the setting properties in the ovf template and this is working fine so far.

Basically, I add property in the product section under property tag and read its value during deployment time using

/usr/sbin/vmtoolsd --cmd 'info-get guestinfo.ovfEnv'

<ProductSection ovf:class="com.palm.product" ovf:instance="1">

     <Info>info section</Info>
     <Product>LimeLite</Product>
     <Vendor>Palm</Vendor>

     <Property ovf:key="UserName" ovf:type="string" ovf:userConfigurable="true" ovf:value="Admin" ovf:qualifiers="MinLen(0),MaxLen(65535)">
          <Label>UserName</Label>
<Description>Creates an user account with the Name provided</Description>
     </Property>

</ProductSection>

Now, I need get password for the user account which we create during deployment. I looked into property data types and I couldn't figure out

the password type that masks the password entered in the dailog during deployment time.

Is password functionality avaialbe in the ovf template already ? If yes, please point me to the location from where I can make use of this.

The property type which are avaialbe in the settings is:

String, StringChoice, Integer, Real, Boolean, External IP Address, vApp IP Address.

I coudn't find password type in here.

ovftool : Specify Hardware version during a conversion ?

Hi everybody,

I'd like to change the hardware version during an export using ovftool. Is there a way to specify it ?
I've seen the "--maxVirtualHardwareVersion" but I'm unable to understand how to use it. I can't find any documentation on the supported syntax anywhere.

Any advice ?
